Bought an old used book today and it absolutely reeks of cigarette smoke. The more I read the worse it gets...ugh. I've never had this happen before

It's #HistoricBridgeAwarenessMonth! Photographed in 1930, this stone eagle was placed on top of a stone pillar located at the western edge of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Bridge, also known as the State Street Bridge, in Harrisburg. A duplicate was placed across the street.
Awesome use of archival collections from the Carlisle Digital Resource Center!

The centre stone of an archway is the KEYSTONE.
The two curves either side of the keystone are called HAUNCHES.
The inner surface of an arch is the INTRADOS.
The wedge-shaped stones from which an arch is built are called VOUSSOIRS.
The two lowest voussoirs are called SPRINGERS.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Three years ago, the infamous downtown sinkhole partially swallowed a Port Authority bus.
Officials said the sinkhole opened up while the bus was stopped at a traffic light. The bus was lifted out of the sinkhole by cranes later that day bit.ly/3SL135a

That exciting time when the records arrive and you haven't yet started to think about the work it'll take to review and process it all 💙
On my desk today: 2 hefty boxes of Eastern State Penitentiary documents c. 1830-1860!
"For us to be able to do something very proactive like this, and hopefully bring these things home to the people, really illustrates why archives exist in the first place."
