I've spent a bunch of time in the last few weeks reading peoples' perspectives on the state of matchmaking in Master+. I hear that a bunch of people hate negative LP states and Aegis, don't worry, message received there. That aside, I keep coming back to a question that I'm interested in Apex players' thoughts on. Whenever we define and constrain match creation on a new dimension of game quality (e.g. "give everyone their primary role all the time", "pair each blue side autofill with a red side autofill into that same role", "accept only teams that have players within 10 MMR of each other and have a total difference of 5 MMR or less", etc), we either take longer to make a match (more constraints -> fewer eligible combinations of players that can create that match) or progressively loosen those constraints as players wait longer (under the logic that a partially-acceptable match is ultimately better than no match at all, and waiting longer is unlikely to produce a perfect match). These constraints (or lack thereof) inevitably create different dimensions of variance in games. For example, if we heavily constrain MMR but don't match autofills, the game's variance may be driven substantially by similar-skill players with differing familiarities in high-agency roles (e.g. Nattynatt vs Challenger autofilled jungler). If we match autofills and allow some amount of lobby skill width, the game's variance may be driven substantially by lopsided skill differentials in lanes, whether expressed through snowbally laning outcomes or through disconnects around shared expectations of appropriate approaches to macro and team play in key shared decision moments. If we match autofills and heavily constrain MMR, we create two different sources of variance: for Challengers, it may be "who gets the weakest Master player after waiting 20 or 30 minutes for the MMR constraints to widen"; while for Diamond players, it may be "who gets the Challenger on their alt who's unwilling to wait 20-30 minutes for a game." I'm curious, then, what forms of variance are most acceptable/desirable for Apex players, given that some variance is inevitable. Thanks in advance for the thoughtful replies!
