Integrated courts. The difference between safety and ongoing harm.
In this article, Pat Shannon, our Staff Lawyer, explains how survivors of domestic abuse face the risk of retraumatization and even conflicting judgments due to the lack of an integrated court system in BC. thestar.com/vancouver/2019/0… via @torontostar
BCNDP election disaster. They lost their way and failed many long before the snap election.
...they’d better bring in some outside help to do a dispassionate post-mortem. Because everyone involved in that government and that campaign had a role in allowing the leader to push forward with one of the most reckless decisions in the history of British Columbia politics. They blew up their government together. And they squandered so much opportunity.
The @bcndp left 2 years of majority gov on the table, in part because of a caucus, cabinet and party that refused to stand up to a sinking leader and start the process of finding a new one. Instead, he drove the party off a cliff.

This is what survivors face once they leave #PostSeparationAbuse
Spice Girls star Mel B says she earned more than £80 million but left her marriage with $936 in a bank account. She was then ordered to pay her ex-husband $15,000 a month in spousal support.
In the video below, she describes how her husband abused her during their marriage.
She was married to Stephen Belafonte for 10 years. She says the abuse was financial as well as physical and emotional, allegations he has repeatedly denied.
Leaving the marriage did not end their financial ties. She still faced legal bills and payments to the man she said had abused her.
Even the Spice Girls reunion tour did not give her enough to buy a home. She said the earnings went toward legal fees and payments to her ex-husband.
During the pandemic, she moved into her mother’s home in Leeds with her children. Her mother thought leaving meant she would be fine, but Mel says she had to rebuild both her finances and her confidence.
By 2024, she had bought a home again, something she once thought might never happen.
Should a woman ever have to pay alimony to the man she says abused her?

They need the court system to stop handing them back. Increasing their contact with an abuser only increases their exposure to abuse.

Conservative rallies always be like
🎤 Let's Get Ready to Rumble 🤼🤼
Happening now: Surrey Mayor elect Doug McCallum opens the @Conservative_BC rally in Newton. “we changed Surrey, let’s now change BC.”
Newton has been held by the @bcndp since 2005, but this time it’s shaping up to be one of the closest in its history.
Former Surrey mayors Dianne Watts & Linda Hepner also sharing the stage. #bcpoli

Kids should be able to watch sports without being bombarded by alcohol and gambling ads. We shouldn't be normalizing addictive products during family entertainment. Let kids enjoy the game without the constant marketing.

Dont forget the BC Civil Resolution Tribunal It has gone from mediating civil disputes in BC to policing international free speech.
Shame must change sides.
I’m compelled to address a matter from quite some time ago.
I was briefly romantically involved with a fellow politician who told me, and the people around us, that he was not married. Neither of us had any professional reporting relationship to the other. He wore no ring and kept no photos of a spouse, and the people closest to him told the same story: his marriage had ended long before we met. I had no reason to doubt it.
That changed when his wife contacted me. I was humiliated, angry, and devastated.
We spoke at length. She was gracious and forgiving to me, and I’m deeply grateful to her. We share the experience of being deceived by the same man, and I wish her nothing but peace.
I have nothing to apologize for beyond trusting a man who lied to me, and many women have shared this experience. The apology is owed by him, not me.
I believe deception this fundamental should carry real consequences, and that our laws haven’t caught up to that.
I won’t be commenting further. I ask that you respect my privacy and that of his family.

Shared custody with an abuser isn’t co-parenting—it’s court-sanctioned access to harm.
