Turkey is openly urging Egypt to ignore UNCLOS and its existing agreements with Greece and Cyprus —effectively treating waters belonging to Greece as up for grabs. This is not diplomacy; it is a deliberate attempt to rewrite maritime boundaries outside the law and set the stage for conflict. In plain terms, Ankara’s public proposals aim to shape Egyptian public opinion and pressure Cairo to abandon or dilute its UNCLOS-compliant deals with Greece, Cyprus and consequently the EU. Turkey is not a party to UNCLOS and has long promoted its own expansionist claims, including via the 2019 Turkey-Libya memorandum, which Egypt, Greece, Cyprus and the EU have rejected as null and void. The recent Turkish Defence Ministry statements offering Egypt a delimitation deal while claiming Cairo would gain 15,000+ km² more than under its Greece agreement fit this pattern. If Egypt were to accept this approach, the costs would be steep: it would undermine Egypt’s preferential partnership with the EU and the trilateral Greece-Cyprus-Egypt framework; it would jeopardise concrete projects linking Greece and Egypt, including green electricity interconnections that serve both countries’ energy and economic interests; and it would signal that the region’s most populous and capable Arab state is prepared to accept Turkish primacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, at the expense of its own sovereign rights and long-term strategic autonomy. Egypt’s interests are NOT served by becoming a junior partner in someone else’s maritime revisionism.
