*INDEPENDENCE DAY MESSAGE TO NARDites* Dear Esteemed NARDites, As Nigeria commemorates her 66th Independence Anniversary today, 1st October 2026, I extend warm greetings and sincere appreciation to every Nigerian Resident Doctor who continues to serve our nation with courage, sacrifice and unwavering dedication. Despite persistent challenges, including unmet welfare needs, insecurity, workplace assaults, inadequate infrastructure and equipment, unfavourable policies, inadequate funding for residency training, and the continuing migration of doctors, we remain steadfast in our commitment to saving lives and sustaining our healthcare system. Indeed, Resident Doctors are among the true heroes of Nigeria’s healthcare system. Your resilience, professionalism and sacrifice in the face of daunting circumstances remain a testament to the strength of our profession and our enduring love for country. As the 46th President of NARD, I assure you that I will leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of improved welfare, better working conditions, quality residency training and a more dignified professional environment for every NARDite. *It is, however, a matter of deep concern that our ultimatum to the Federal Government commences today, on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.* This is not a path we would have wished to take on a day dedicated to celebrating our nation, but it underscores the urgency of the issues confronting our members and the need for meaningful, timely and sustainable action. Our commitment remains to constructive engagement and genuine dialogue. We therefore urge the relevant authorities to seize this opportunity to address the outstanding issues affecting Resident Doctors and strengthen the foundation of Nigeria’s healthcare system. I also acknowledge and deeply appreciate the contributions, sacrifices and leadership of our past NARD Presidents and leaders, whose efforts have laid the foundation upon which we continue to build today. As we celebrate our nation, let us remain united, resolute and hopeful for a Nigeria where every healthcare worker can serve with dignity and every citizen can access quality healthcare.
