The latest population survey, released by Indonesiaβs Ministry of Forestry in July 2026, estimates that only 716 Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) remain in the wild. They are the world's rarest great ape.
The situation is especially precarious because Tapanuli orangutans reproduce slowly and survive in three isolated populations.
Studies indicate that sustained additional population losses exceeding just 1% annually will result in extinction.
