My latest paper has just been published in @CambridgePrisms analysing 40 years of data on "Extinction and survival of French Polynesian tree snails (Partulidae)". After several tragic decades the prospects now look good. doi.org/10.1017/ext.2026.100….

2/8 There are 27 species of sturgeons and every one is imperiled. Taxonomy of genera Acipenser and Huso is paraphyletic in every phylogenetic study for the past 28 years, across molecular & morphological datasets. In 2025, we proposed to fix this, elevating the genus Sinotsturio

Are plant–pollinator interactions more specialised in the tropics? After ~25 years of thinking about this question, our new global analysis suggests there’s no simple latitudinal rule: it all depends! Read about it here: jeffollerton.co.uk/2026/10/0…

Fake figs, fooled fig wasps & rewarded flies: this plant has one of the strangest #pollination systems yet found in #Apocynaceae. I’ve written about the new study and how it fits into our wider work on this extraordinary plant family: jeffollerton.co.uk/2026/09/1…

Cardiopteridales "are accepted as a separate order because they are sister to the larger lamiid clade (Zhang et al., 2020; Zuntini et al., 2024). They include Stemonuraceae and Cardiopteridaceae."

While additional money for conservation is welcome, I find aspects of this announcement of a $4M partnership between @colossal & the IUCN somewhat worrying prnewswire.com/news-releases… 1/6 🧵
Looking to produce a publicly available aggregate list of taxa that have not been recorded in 100 years or more but are not regarded as (possibly) extinct, as "Project 100". Will be doing plenty of searching of the literature myself, but any leads would be greatly appreciated.TIA

Would love to read threads where researchers take an older paper and discuss it in light of subsequent research/discoveries. How does it hold up today? The increase of knowledge will inevitably eclipse some aspects of a paper, but the deeper insights often hold up well.

An international expert was confused after travelling to the Daintree to see the tallest known example of a critically endangered rainforest tree.
Unfortunately, the 90cm-wide Ristantia pachysperma had been felled by rangers about a week before he arrived

Tropical Plant Families Identification Handbook has a new 2026 printing - some tweaks to families and updates of species numbers (and a few errors corrected). E.g., Icacinaceae are no longer ‘Unplaced’ and Boraginaceae changed to reflect family debates. #botany
New thylacine photo discovered by Kiwi Logan Coote. Taken by an NZ dignitary while visiting Beaumaris Zoo in 1932 or 1934. Shows the last captive. Notice the penile mound under the base of tail. Doesn't look fully grown to me so I'm guessing 1932, but no expert on thyla ontogeny.
