🚨 BREAKING SPACE NEWS ☀️🌍 NOAA GOES-19 CAPTURES MYSTERIOUS SOLAR WHITEOUT AS EARTH EXPERIENCES NEARBY ASTEROID FLYBYS Live earth: live.spacetracker.org October 17, 2026 | SpaceTracker Science Observatory 🌐 An extraordinary sequence has appeared in NOAA's GOES-19 CCOR-1 solar coronagraph observations. Between approximately 01:15 and 06:15 UTC on October 17, the instrument recorded a dramatic transformation: the normally visible solar corona became overwhelmed by intense white illumination, followed by the appearance of an enormous curved dark silhouette. What caused it? Was it the Moon, Earth, a powerful solar eruption, or another celestial object? SpaceTracker examines the evidence. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔭 1. THE SOLAR WHITEOUT At approximately 02:30 UTC, the coronagraph's viewing field became almost entirely white. By 03:15 UTC, the unusual brightness persisted around the instrument's central black occulting disk. At approximately 04:45 UTC, a striking curved dark boundary was visible along the upper-right region. By 06:15 UTC, the familiar solar coronal structures were becoming visible again. The entire sequence unfolded over several hours. Importantly, the central black structure is part of the coronagraph itself, designed to block direct sunlight so scientists can observe the faint outer solar atmosphere. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌍 2. DID EARTH CAUSE THE EVENT? Earthshine is currently the leading explanation. GOES-19 operates in geostationary orbit, approximately 35,786 km above Earth's equator. Under certain observing conditions, sunlight reflected by Earth can enter the instrument's optical system and interfere with solar observations. This phenomenon is particularly relevant around the equinox seasons. The extraordinary white brightness and its gradual disappearance are consistent with Earth-related stray-light interference. The curved dark boundary could be associated with Earth's viewing geometry or an optical artifact, but its identity has not been definitively established. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌙 3. WAS IT THE MOON? The previous New Moon occurred on October 10, 2026, approximately one week before the observation. On October 17, the Moon was waxing toward first quarter. That means the Moon had moved considerably away from the Sun's apparent position. Although the Moon can cross the CCOR-1 field of view, the lunar geometry makes a Moon transit an unlikely explanation for this particular sequence. The Moon remains an important object to consider, but the recording does not confirm a lunar crossing. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ☄️ 4. ASTEROIDS PASSING NEAR EARTH While NOAA monitored the Sun, several independently tracked asteroids were making relatively close approaches to Earth. Notable encounters around October 16–18 include: ☄️ 2026 TB2: Approximately 1.90 million km from Earth. ☄️ 2026 TA94: Approximately 2.08 million km. ☄️ 2026 TE2: Approximately 2.29 million km. ☄️ 2026 TS: Approximately 908,000 km on October 18, equivalent to about 2.36 lunar distances. These flybys are separate astronomical events. There is no verified evidence connecting them with NOAA's unusual solar imagery. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ☀️ 5. WAS IT A MASSIVE SOLAR ERUPTION? Coronagraphs are designed to observe coronal mass ejections, enormous clouds of magnetized plasma expelled from the Sun. However, a CME ordinarily appears as material expanding outward through the viewing field. The almost complete whiteout and large changing dark boundary do not match the usual appearance of a CME alone. A simultaneous solar eruption cannot be ruled out without examining independent solar observations, but the whiteout itself is not evidence of an extreme solar storm. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔬 6. WHAT SCIENTISTS CAN CONFIRM ✅ The footage shows substantial changes in CCOR-1 image brightness. ✅ The central black disk and supporting structures belong to the instrument. ✅ Earthshine is a documented source of coronagraph interference. ✅ The Moon was approaching first quarter, not New Moon. ✅ Multiple asteroids had independently predicted Earth flybys. ⚠️ The precise origin of the curved dark boundary remains unconfirmed. ⚠️ No extraordinary object or unusually dangerous solar eruption has been established from these images. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌌 THE BIGGER PICTURE Observing the Sun from space requires more than powerful cameras. Even 35,786 km above Earth, reflected sunlight, spacecraft geometry, lunar motion and instrument optics can dramatically influence what an observer sees. The October 17 GOES-19 sequence offers a fascinating example of why every unusual space observation deserves careful scientific investigation. Sometimes the most remarkable discovery is not a new object, but understanding how Earth itself changes our view of the Sun. 📡 Observation: NOAA GOES-19 / CCOR-1 🛰️ Analysis: SpaceTracker Science Observatory 🔗 spacetracker.space Sources: NOAA SWPC, NOAA NCEI, NASA JPL CNEOS #BREAKING #SpaceNews #NOAA #GOES19 #SpaceWeather #SolarActivity #Earthshine #Moon #Asteroids #Astronomy #SpaceTracker
