Through our constitutional mandate, we provide factual, independent information on government spending and performance. By auditing financial statements, performance information, and compliance with laws and regulations, the AGSA gives citizens insight into how government department institutions have performed. Over the years, the AGSA has been providing illuminating insights for a better South Africa. AGSA reports that are released to the public enable citizens to hold those charged with running government institutions accountable. @SABCEducation SA FM | 22 October | 09:45  Visit agsa.co.za to learn more.    #KnowYourAGSA  #115YearsofAGSA  #IlluminatingInsightsForABetterSouthAfrica

How does the work of the AGSA empower citizens?  The AGSA provides independent, objective audit opinions on state departments and institutions, helping ensure that information reported to Parliament, legislatures and municipal councils gives reliable insight into how public resources are managed. Citizens can use our reports to hold public representatives accountable.  For example, if a municipality reports spending money on water infrastructure while residents’ taps remain dry, audit reports can help establish whether the money was spent in accordance with applicable laws, efficiently, and for its intended purpose. @SABCEducation Visit agsa.co.za to learn more.  #KnowYourAGSA  #115YearsofAGSA  #IlluminatingInsightsForABetterSouthAfrica

At the dialogue hosted by the University of Johannesburg’s Wiseman Nkuhlu Centre for Innovation, Thought Leadership and Governance (WNCIG), Deputy Auditor-General Ms Bongi Ngoma emphasised that the question is not whether South Africa needs more accountability, but whether leaders, professionals, academics, and public servants are prepared to strengthen ethics, build capability, and embrace accountability within their spheres of influence. She added that when ethics, capability, and accountability come together, public confidence grows, and a stronger public confidence strengthens democracy. #ThoughtLeadership #IlluminatingInsightsForABetterSouthAfrica

Does the AGSA refer material irregularities (MI) for further investigation?  Yes, indeed. Since the MI process began, the AGSA has referred 19 MIs to the DPCI (Hawks) and 32 to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) for further investigation.  The AGSA continues to work with both institutions through formal arrangements, follow-up engagements, joint discussions and information requests where required. This collaboration strengthens the implementation of the AGSA’s enhanced mandate and supports greater accountability for public funds. @SABCEducation SA FM | 15 October | 09:45    Learn more: agsa.co.za    #KnowYourAGSA  #115YearsofAGSA  #IlluminatingInsightsForABetterSouthAfrica

Opening the dialogue, Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu shared his belief that “we can fix this country if we can fix ourselves.” He explained that the Wiseman Nkuhlu Centre for Innovation, Thought Leadership and Governance seeks to leverage the spaces we occupy to address South Africa’s challenges and build institutions that can realise the aspirations of President Nelson Mandela. What does the AGSA do when a material irregularity is identified?  Under the Public Audit Act, the auditor-general can issue binding recommendations, refer matters for investigation or issue a certificate of debt for financial recovery.  Here’s an example: At a District Municipality in the North West province, the AGSA identified an MI involving water tankering services during a drought relief effort. A service provider had overbilled the municipality for hours not worked and kilometres not travelled.  After the relevant MI process steps were followed and the money was not recovered by the municipality, the auditor-general issued a certificate of debt for R4,6 million against the municipal manager. @SABCEducation Learn more at agsa.co.za  #KnowYourAGSA  #115YearsofAGSA  #IlluminatingInsightsForABetterSouthAfrica
