The entertainment of dining at Rosings was repeated about twice a week; and, allowing for the loss of Sir William, and there being only one card-table in the evening, every such entertainment was the counterpart of the first. #JaneAusten #PrideAndPrejudice

Sometimes the grieving person doesn't want to share their feelings.
Replying to @SaffronKim
@SaffronKim I thought this might be interesting for you. I think it was his way of dealing with his beloved sister‘s death. But as he himself said:“ No one‘s grief is the same.“

Whenever any of the cottagers were disposed to be quarrelsome, discontented, or too poor, she sallied forth into the village to settle their differences, silence their complaints, and scold them into harmony and plenty. #JaneAusten #PrideAndPrejudice

They pipe the way to glory and the grave; Foolish and young, the gay and golden boys Love cannot save. #KatharineTynan
There they go marching all in step so gay, Smooth-cheeked and golden, food for shells and guns, Blithely they go as to a wedding day, The mothers' sons. ‘Joining the Colours’  #KatharineTynan #RemembranceDay 🖼️A French Highway, 1918 : #JohnNash : Imperial War Museums

Can't imagine anything more heartbreaking. That poor mother 💔 Pls do read the poem if you can
Remembering WILFRED OWEN who died 108yrs ago today. He was killed in action one week (almost to the hour) before the signing of the Armistice. His mother received the telegram informing her of his death on Armistice Day as the church bells in Shrewsbury rang out in celebration.

Now and then they were honoured with a call from her ladyship, and nothing escaped her observation that was passing in the room during these visits. She examined into their employments, looked at their work, and advised them to do it differently. #JaneAusten #PrideAndPrejudice

This
When the love of your life dies your heart breaks into a million pieces. But as the years go by I’ve come to learn that even if it’s broken it’s not empty. It’s still full of all the love that you shared. Hold on to that. #grief

Above all, this book is not concerned with Poetry. The subject of it is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity. #WilfredOwen
'My subject is War I mean the truth untold The pity war distilled The poetry is in the pity' The words of Wilfred Owen with lines from his poems on a reredos in the war memorial chapel of Ripon Cathedral, North Yorkshire. Owen was killed in France #OTD 4 November 1918.

Had I but served my God with half the zeal I served my king, he would not in mine age Have left me naked to mine enemies. H8 3.2 #Shakespeare
#OTD 4th November 1530 Cardinal Wolsey was arrested for treason at his palace at Cawood, North Yorkshire. Thomas Wolsey had had a brilliant career, rising from the son of a lowly townsman of Ipswich to become Lord Chancellor of England as well as Archbishop of York. For over fifteen years he had been heavily relied on by King Henry VIII. He was that powerful that he was often referred to by Ambassadors in correspondence as ‘alter rex’ (the other king). As with all positions of power, he was dependent on Henry’s goodwill, and when he failed to attain an annulment of King Henry VIII’s first marriage, his fall from power was rapid. The old lie #WilfredOwen
November 4, 1918, a week before the Armistice, poet Wilfred Owen was killed in France at the age of 25. He wrote to his mother explaining the meaning behind the title of his poem Dulce et Decorum est: "The famous Latin tag [from Horace's Odes] means, of course, It is sweet and meet to die for one's country. Sweet! and decorous!" tolle lege

I dreamed kind Jesus fouled the big-gun gears; And caused a permanent stoppage in all bolts; And buckled with a smile Mausers and Colts; And rusted every bayonet with His tears. And there were no more bombs, of ours or Theirs, Not even an old flint-lock. #WilfredOwen d #OTD 1918

Her manners and temper were deplorable and her extravagance passed all bounds, but her beauty was so dazzling and irresistible that, despite her unpopularity, her ascendancy over the king lasted for many years. Sounds like sth out of #JaneAusten's Juvenilia 😊 #BarbaraVilliers
In honour of the infamous Barbara Villiers' birth in November 1640, I will be posting about her life in the lead-up to her christening on 27th November 1640. Yesterday, I shared a card from 1932 about her second husband, Robert Fielding. For 3 November, I've opened The Seventeenth Century Lady Archives again, this time for the 1937 card also made by Player & Sons Cigarettes. Barbara's image has, in one form or another, been in near-continuous print since her lifetime. #Ravenous

A morbid taste for bones 😊 --- 1st thing I thought --- glad someone else remembered
Today is the Feast of St. Winifred of Wales, Virgin and Martyr. Her life has been woven into legend and devotion for centuries. She was also the subject for the Ellis Peeters Cadfael mystery "A Morbid Taste For Bones" where her connection to Shrewsbury Abbey was drawn upon.

She’s glad the birds are gone away, She’s glad her simple worsted grey Is silver now with clinging mist. The desolate, deserted trees, The faded earth, the heavy sky, The beauties she so truly sees. #RobertFrost
