1996 Relived - Walker Racing and Galles Racing announced their plan to contest both May 26 races (Us 500 and Indy)
Walker would send Mike Groff to Indianapolis, while Galles would field Davy Jones.
Their CART drivers, Robby Gordon and Eddie Lawson, respectively, would race in the U.S. 500.

Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone turns 96.
As a driver, Ecclestone failed to qualify his own Connaught for the 1958 Monaco GP. He later managed F1 drivers Stuart Lewis-Evans & Jochen Rindt. Brabham F1 team owner from 1972 till 1987, Ecclestone led the F1 Group from 1987-2017.

1936 - Roosevelt Raceway was built on Long Island, NY, to revive the historic Vanderbilt Cup auto race. It was a 4-mile road course with 16 unbanked corners including 10 tight hairpins. That year's race was won by Nuvolari.
