A big thanks to Noah Oskow at Unseen Japan for giving “Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw” such a thorough and nuanced reading, and for asking difficult, important questions.
Much to think about in this review and interview with biographer William Andrews.

The playwright, dancer and theatre artist Akuta Masahiko has died, it was announced today. He was 80 years old. In the late 1960s, he was a member of the University of Tokyo Zenkyoto student movement. He famously invited Mishima Yukio to debate the students, which was filmed.
We're delighted to see others getting as much out of “Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw” as we have.
Thanks to everyone who's picked up a copy of William Andrews's biography of Japanese filmmaker Adachi Masao🎬📚

NEW: The demonstrations that have rocked France somehow led into a nasty spat online between Japanese and French social media users. Here's how the conversation devolved into arguments over immigration, racism, and even World War II.

Always a treat to spot your own book in the wild. The only photographer to hand was my eight-year-old daughter, whose skills with a camera seem almost as inconsistent as my ability to smile naturally.

It's not my preferred way to buy books, but Tokyo Doesn't Exist is now available from Amazon. Given the spirit of artistic integrity over commercial success that the memoir is passionately championing, ordering through your local bookshop is even better! amazon.com/Tokyo-Doesnt-Exis…

Breaking cover on this garbage website to let those of you still here, stalking the ruins, know that I have a new book out.
"Tokyo Doesn't Exist" may be "Not a guide to music or cycling in Japan" but they're definitely a big part of it:
