The Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services is strengthening Kenya’s coordinated childcare system for children aged 0–4 through action at national and county levels. On the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Ministry will convene a Pan-African High-Level Dialogue to bring together National Govt , County Govt , childcare implementation organisations, development partners and funders to discuss the vision for quality childcare in Kenya and the importance of coordinated action within a devolved system. I look forward to discussing our reform priorities.

#BeyondAidDependency: Africa’s Health Financing, Led from Within @WillowHealthKe, in partnership with @nighealthwatch, hosted the “Beyond Aid Dependency” roundtable to explore how African countries can fund their own health systems sustainably. Policymakers, economists, and civil society leaders examined practical, homegrown solutions, from health taxes to domestic resource mobilisation, aimed at making funding predictable, transparent, and locally owned. Edwin Macharia, Co-founder of @AxumEarth, delivered the keynote address, contributing valuable insights that enriched the discussion. The roundtable highlighted strategies now entering policy conversations, demonstrating the role of collaborative dialogue in shaping Africa’s health financing future. willowhealthmedia.org/roundt…

“Kenya loses about KSh 100 billion annually to alcohol- and tobacco-related diseases. Excise revenue should focus on disease burden first, not just collection. Historically, only 7% of excise revenue reaches health programs due to weak systems.” — Jonathan Munge, Project Manager, Axum #BeyondAidDependency #Tax

Across Africa, health systems face growing pressure as external aid becomes less predictable and fiscal space tightens. Donor dependence is no longer sustainable. Strengthening domestic health financing mechanisms is essential to essential to ensure health services reach the people who need them most. #BeyondAidDependency

𝐖𝐞’𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞. 📌 Africa doesn’t suffer from a capital deficit — it suffers from a recognition deficit. Billions flow annually through community-based systems: 𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐬, 𝐒𝐀𝐂𝐂𝐎𝐬, 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬. These are the spine of local resilience. Yet, they remain structurally excluded from formal financing strategies, dismissed as too informal to govern and too fragmented to trust. 💥 The question isn’t whether domestic capital exists. It’s why our systems continue to treat it as invisible. We’re bringing the ecosystem into the same room to ask: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭? 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲? ✨ Join this catalytic session led by @Faswani of @_avpa_, 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐳𝐨 (𝐌𝐏𝐇) of @SafaricomFDN, @SyakaaWilliam of @AxumEarth, and @arif_neky of the @sdgpartnership. 🌍 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 → eaphilanthropyconference.org… 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 — 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬.

Feeling especially energized this #WorldMalariaDay ⚡ Today’s @Amref + @Axum #AfricaDialogues was one to watch! Timely. Focused. Real. 💥 “We need to look ahead. We need to rethink, we need to reshape, and we need to move away from words into action. Ending malaria is possible. We are away from our target but if we come together, we know it can be done.” -@DekunleCharles Charles, CEO, @endmalaria RabM Partnership 🌍 Also reminded by @OliviaNgou that we must also focus on ‘Human Resistance’ reflecting on the importance of social and behavior change communication to adress community concerns driven by misinformation. Thanks to Halidou Tinto @ZachariaKafuko, @MehreenDatoo for your time + insight + commitment. @SII for supporting this critical conversation. And my partner @edwin_macharia of @AxumEarth for the brilliant panel conversation 💡 The message is clear: #MalariaEndsWithUs
