I did little quick render of scarlet on the full resolution of my new monitor. Sorry if the colors may be fucked I'm still trying to calibrate it.

After 7 years of service my monitor is showing this dark shade thing across the screen. Damn its really showing its age.

As much as I love and defend Apple, at some point they really need to start investing in better optics and larger camera sensors.
I understand that people buy phones for far more than just photography, but honestly, that’s even more reason for Apple to consider an Ultra model specifically aimed at people who prioritize image making. Give that version the larger sensors, more ambitious optics, and camera hardware needed to properly compete with the photography-focused flagships from Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Huawei, and others.
It’s honestly kind of laughable that the 70mm camera on my Xiaomi 14 Ultra, with its 1/2.51-inch sensor, feels more versatile, cleaner, and more reliable than what Apple offered on the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024 and arguably even some of the newer iPhones.
Apple’s main camera is still very good, especially when you factor in its processing and video pipeline, but there’s only so much software can compensate for. Eventually, you hit the physical limitations of tiny 1/3.0-inch and 1/2.55-inch sensors paired with small optics, limited light gathering, and mediocre close focusing distances.
At some point, Apple has to improve the actual camera hardware, not just keep squeezing more out of the same basic formula.

Real-time lens tracing experiment in three.js (WIP)
Turns out you can generate metric depth with a 40 MB model on the CPU in the browser in about 10 seconds. That's enough to drive the lens simulation, no 3D scene needed.
Might turn the 2D part into its own app.

One day somebody might appreciate all this. Hopefully I’m still making things when they do. #photography
I'm like this with @NothingRand0m because one of his favorites is crow 💀
