ALT Upcoming BEMC Talk: Capturing “gender” in Epidemiology: from concepts to methodological strategies Hélène Colineaux, Imperial College London Date: September 4, 2024, 4:00 CEST Location: Hybrid (in person at the Campus Charité Mitte and via Zoom) “Are biological differences partially influenced by social gender mechanisms, or are they solely due to sexual dimorphism? To address this question, we needed to clarify several points, particularly: How can we conceptualize, measure, and capture Gender in epidemiology? Utilizing the methodological framework of causal inference based on counterfactual reasoning, we developed an approach that moves away from focusing on gender measurement, proposing a more dynamic and structural perspective. We indeed demonstrated that it is possible to analyse the impact of gender on biology and health without relying on a gender variable, by conceptualizing gender as a structural phenomenon and operationalizing it as an effect or difference in effect.”
