MIT: Malicious Intent to Terminate
Troubling evidence revealed in Sabatini case at @mit Kristin Knouse messaged that Sabatini was going to be "Weinstein’ed out of science"; that she was "out for blood" University administration ran an investigation which had a predetermined outcome foxnews.com/opinion/mike-dav…

Dear President Kornbluth and Chairman Gorenberg, Yesterday, as I am sure you are aware, a Boston jury unanimously found that @MIT professor Kristin Knouse defamed David Sabatini, falsely accused him of rape and sexual harassment, and tortuously interfered with his contractual arrangements including his tenure at MIT. MIT and its tenure review committee relied on Professor Knouse’s statements when it took away David’s tenure and terminated him. MIT's policies explicitly prohibit harassment, retaliation, and fabrication of claims. Falsely accusing a colleague of rape and sexual harassment and pushing for his termination under false pretenses are clearly violations of MIT policy. In light of the unanimous findings of the jury after five years of discovery, many legal motions and countermotions by both parties, and a three-week trial in Suffolk County Superior Court in Boston: Is MIT going to take away Knouse’s tenure and terminate her? If not, why not? Is MIT going to restore David’s tenure, and apologize for firing him? If not, why not? In light of what has transpired in this grave miscarriage of justice, MIT has the opportunity and the obligation to right a serious wrong here. At a minimum, the public deserves transparency into what actions MIT is taking in this case as taxpayers are major funders of MIT. Sincerely, Bill Ackman
A civil jury ruled in favor of ex-MIT scientist David Sabatini, who was accused by a younger colleague of inappropriate sexual conduct in his Cambridge research lab, and awarded him $6 million in damages. trib.al/s3v9VIX

This I have no doubt. I certainly have heard of many cases but very few go to trial so the documents are always hidden.

And yours is the only such case that has had sunshine. Much corruption is still under cover. Thank you for holding on to make sure this saw the light of day.

Indeed very few do. No doubt more people have suffered innocently and actual perperators went unpunished.
This I have no doubt. I certainly have heard of many cases but very few go to trial so the documents are always hidden.

I always knew the process had been corrupt but only many years of costly discovery during the litigation led to the full picture

🔱 Part 2 — Court Exhibit 287: Continued alignment and expressed partnership between MIT and Whitehead leadership 🚨 On 19 September 2021, Whitehead Director Ruth Lehmann confirmed that she and MIT Dean of Science Nergis Mavalvala judged the Sabatini situation similarly. ⚠️ Mavalvala responded by praising Lehmann's leadership and expressing her “admiration and support” and appreciation for their “partnership.” These communications preceded the completion of MIT's tenure-review proceedings, subsequently chaired by Mavalvala. 📑 THE ORIGINAL COURT EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED BELOW.

The pain and suffering and massive expense of the litigation was worth it not only for vindication by a jury of my peers but also to reveal exactly how scientific institutions decided not to follow due process (which is almost akin to scientific method)
MIT thinks it can put on a show claiming to value merit to keep the DOJ and the White House off its back. David Sabatini’s case exposes that smokescreen. Their true colors were on display throughout his ordeal. Scientific excellence was disposable when it conflicted with their political priorities. They have hollowed out the science while continuing to trade on the reputation it built. Their real priorities are far removed from the excellence they advertise. Excellent article from @mrddmia. foxnews.com/opinion/mike-dav…

This is commonplace. The narrative takes precedence, and a smear or rumor is enough to cause professional relationships to disintegrate. Truth is often of no relevance. A vague cloud surrounds the person that has no bearing on their actions or character.
How to destroy your departmental rival in 3 easy steps: 1. Make serious allegations. Evidence optional 2 Let rumour do the work while your rival’s reputation burns 3 Count on HR to swallow the story if you’re an institutional favourite A major problem at many universities now

“An academic who criticised universities’ marketing efforts as ‘bad’ is under investigation by his institution after fellow staff members raised complaints.” As reported in Times Higher Education, CAF is currently supporting the academic in question, Dr Mike Ryder, following Lancaster University's decision to investigate him over criticism of its marketing practices. We have secured specialist external legal counsel to advise on the case, and a formal letter challenging the basis for the investigation will be sent to the University on Dr Ryder’s behalf early next week. Full story in @timeshigher: timeshighereducation.com/new… If you’re an academic facing an investigation or disciplinary action over your lawful speech, please get in touch: [email protected]

Fortunately, when it comes to the protection of free speech in higher education under the 2023 Act, it doesn’t matter what an academic’s area of research is — even an astronomer like me can point out his institution’s management failings. (officeforstudents.org.uk/new…)
