The cost is real — they gave up a recent 12th-overall pick (Alexander Command) and a solid middle-six forward in Dawson Mercer — but it’s not excessive for this caliber of goalie, especially one who had requested a trade and been suspended. Early returns on the Devils’ goaltending this season (team SV% around .880) made the upgrade necessary if they want to contend. The long contract is the main risk (age + a down 2025-26 with a .895 SV% and 2.86 GAA), but the pedigree and Olympic form justify it. Why it works for Winnipeg The Jets were never going to get full market value for a 33-year-old who wanted out.
