5. Teach civility and set expectations & norms of respect early. Presenting & discussing hot topics like race, gender & foreign relations on a weekly basis creates a safe environment where it is okay for students to take risks, share opinions, & learn to disagree respectfully.
4. Teach different perspectives & encourage students to ask perceptive and penetrating questions about important changes in the world. Play the devil's advocate to challenge students to better understand their opinions and news sources.
1
3. Start early, practice often. This includes topics outside of politics & election news. Try out a variety of topics to get students used to analyzing information.

2. Configure the classroom for student-led discussions. Have student leaders facilitate the discussion & call on other students to speak. Set the rules that all students are expected to participate at least 1x by asking a question, commenting on the topic, or sharing an opinion.
1
1. Try assigning a few students each week to pick & research a news topic to discuss. Have students lead a 5-minute presentation to explain the context of the event, compare the different articles, identify possible biases & opposing points of view, & give their own opinion.
