✍️ NEW: 21 Substack Tips for Writers: What I’ve Learned About Growth, SEO, and Connecting with Readers geni.us/21SubstackTips by @BadRedheadMedia I've written a lot about Substack: how to set it up, how to grow, why people can’t find your posts, what the stats mean, where all the settings are (well, today, anyway), and why you probably don’t need to panic every time someone unsubscribes. 👉 I've also created an entire free section just for Substack Tips. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, changed my mind about a few strategies, and spent more hours poking around all these slithery settings than I care to admit. 💥 Shout-out to my exclusive advertising sponsor, the always-free @Booklinker (universal book links—so helpful!), and the paid tool, @geniuslink. I love and use both💥. Since many of you are new here (hello!), or perhaps you’re not new but still scratching your head about what’s what, I've pulled my Substack advice into one free reference guide. I’ve linked to my more detailed articles throughout, so you can read what interests you and skip what doesn’t. Change happens with shocking regularity around here, so this will probably be out of date in a few months, but ya know. I don’t work here. Nobody asked me. This is the Substack guide I wish someone had handed me when I started. I clicked through every menu to see what would happen. What happened was I spent an hour in some Settings somewhere and still hadn’t written a damn word... Click or see bio for the rest! Are you on Substack? What do you love/hate? Please share.

#MondayBlogs 8 Writing and Publishing Lessons I Learned From Writing 8 Books | Rachel Thompson @BadRedheadMedia geni.us/8Lessons What eight books taught me about fear, rejection, marketing, and the writing life...so far. I've written eight books as of this date: self-pub’d, hybrid, had an agent, directed a hybrid imprint, worked with two small boutique publishers, and have owned my own book marketing biz since 2011. I work in the industry. You’d think I’d understand how publishing works by now. And I do, mostly. Yet every time I publish a book, some ridiculous, hopeful little part of me still thinks: Maybe this is the one everyone will chitchat about at work. Maybe I can just eat bonbons and hope my book sells millions. Maybe readers will magically find it cause that always happens… I know better. We all intuitively know better. And hope is not a plan. And yet, we all still want ‘it,’ whatever ‘it’ means. Some of my books have won awards, some have sold better than others, and some found readers long after I stopped checking rankings. I’ve written humor, three books for writers (marketing, SEO, and the dreaded branding), and three deeply personal books about childhood sexual abuse, trauma, and healing, and been included in several anthologies. Writing each one affected me differently. I learned plenty, though not always while writing; sometimes it took years to understand what each book taught me. 💥 Shout-out to my exclusive advertising sponsor, the always-free Booklinker (universal book links—so helpful!), and the paid tool, GeniusLink. I love both💥 (affiliate link). These aren’t my truths about developing character arcs, the politics of commas, or the single best way to market your work that works 100% of the time (if you find it, please share). These are the truths I’ve developed from writing, publishing, and marketing eight books of my own, and hundreds of others. Read more: geni.us/8Lessons Always Free to read and subscribe!

#MondayBlogs 🍂 10 Practical Ways to Save Your Book From Failing Sales | Rachel Thompson @BadRedheadMedia geni.us/MarketingFreeAndPaid Your book isn’t selling. Before you decide you need to spend $2,000 on ads, redesign your entire website, dance on TikTok, start a podcast, make seventeen Reels, or fire your cover designer, stop. Poor sales are data. Something isn’t connecting between your book and the people who might want to read it. The question is where. You’ve worked in book marketing for 15+ years, and one of the biggest mistakes I see authors make is assuming poor sales automatically mean their book sucks, they don't have enough marketing, or they haven’t spent enough on ads (it could be any, or none, of those). Maybe people aren’t seeing the book, or they’re seeing it but not clicking; they’re clicking but not buying; or they’re buying Book One and never touching Book Two. Those are completely different problems, and spending more money on promo won’t necessarily fix any of them. What helps is strategy. 💥 Shout-out to my exclusive advertising sponsor, the always-free @Booklinker (universal book links—so helpful!), and the paid tool, @geniuslink. I love both💥 I’ve written before about why book marketing has no easy button, because no single tactic, ad, social platform, viral post, or launch will do all the work for us. So, before you decide your book is DOA, here are five free and five reasonably priced ways to kick your sales in the pants.👖 Click or see bio for the rest!

#MondayBlogs Badass & Broken, or Formidable Survivor? | by James Herman Kleiger, PsyD ow.ly/xMjp50ZkOqm "My new novel, Pareidolia: Illusions, Deceptions and Murder, is the latest installment in the Nicola Kitts psychological thriller series, featuring my protagonist, who, like the characters Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Sethe from Toni Morrison’s Beloved, embodies both brokenness and badassery. The list of such memorable female characters – often described as “badass” and broken – is extensive, spanning classic figures like Jane Eyre and contemporary ones like Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games trilogy). Each, like Kitts, has been wounded by trauma and loss yet has emerged with fierce determination, strength, and perseverance." Read more 👉 Free to read and subscribe. ow.ly/xMjp50ZkOqm

#MondayBlogs I wrote Grammar Errors Part I. Hundreds of you had THOUGHTS. Here’s Part II (and yes, I know it should be ‘Grammatical’ errors, but that sounds like little green Mike Wazowski in Monsters). Bring your red pen! | @BadRedheadMedia geni.us/GrammarErrors2 1. Your vs. You’re Your shows possession: Your book is on the table. You’re means you are: You’re pretending not to refresh your sales dashboard. If you can replace the word with you are, use you’re. “Your welcome” can’t sit with us. 2. Irregardless The standard word is regardless. Yes, irregardless appears in dictionaries because people have used it for a long time, but that doesn’t mean we agree. Dictionaries record language; they don't come to your house to approve every grammar decision you make because that would be weirdly intrusive. Irregardless is generally labeled nonstandard. In edited writing, please use regardless and save everyone an argument. 3. Conscious vs. Conscience We’re conscious when we’re awake and aware. Your conscience is the inner voice that tells you not to correct a stranger’s typo in the middle of their highly emotional post about blue bunnies in space. Being conscious gives us opportunity. Our conscience tells us, "Stop scrolling already, Rachel. You should be writing.” So bossy... Click or see bio for the rest! Always free!

#MondayBlogs Grammar Errors You May Be Making Right Now and How to Stop. Please. | Rachel Thompson @BadRedheadMedia geni.us/GrammaticalErrors Twenty-five word crimes that make writers twitch... Okay, I admit it; I have grammar pet peeves. Come on, we all do. We may pretend we’re far too evolved to judge other people’s word choices, but then someone writes alot, and suddenly we’re pacing around the house muttering, “It’s two words. TWO, dammit.” Might just be me. So, with affection and a tiny speck of judgment, let’s discuss a few repeat offenders. 1. Alot No. It’s a lot. Two words. You wouldn’t write alittle, abunch, or awholemess. Please stop making a and lot live together before they’re ready. 2. For Free You received the book free. You downloaded the guide free. You attended the event free of charge. You can say you received it for free; that phrase is grammatically acceptable, widely used, and understood. I still don’t like it. My dad hates this phrase (former retail guy), and he’s 89, so we listen. Not every pet peeve is a rule. Sometimes a collection of perfectly innocent words irritates us by simply existing, kinda like your little brother. 3. People Who, Things That He is the author who wrote the book. This is the book that ruined my sleep last night. Who is preferred for people, while that is more commonly used for things. Using that for a person isn’t always grammatically wrong, but who usually sounds more natural. Your editor is a person who catches mistakes, not a helpful household appliance that lives inside your laptop, no matter how convenient. Editors need rest, too. Animals deserve flexibility. If Pip knocks a glass off the counter while staring directly into my soul, he is absolutely a who because I want to, ya know, live. 🔵 NEW: How One COVID Workaround Helped Save My $100 Million Business by @WorkedForMeBook jeffburgessauthor.com/2026/1… Like most of the country, I watched Dr. Fauci plead the Fifth over one hundred times – as is his right to do. Interestingly enough, he had taken away so many of our rights and freedoms, so just because he had the right to do so, it did not mean it wasn’t a cowardly act. It’s always easier to look back on something. Sadly, like everything else these days, it was split along party lines. More than anything, it took me back to that spring of 2020 when all of this was unfolding. My company BCDVideo was considered a small business, although we were just coming off our first – turned out to be only a -$100M sales year. Well, $108.8M, but who’s counting? We were running on all cylinders. To top it off, we had a $20M month in January. How’s your math? Then it happened. My son, Alexander, who had managed our supply chain and was familiar with China through his previous stint with Grainger, first started hearing bits and pieces of it through his channel. Then news started hitting of people returning from China to Washington state carrying the virus. No reason to go through the rest of that story; we all know it by now. But what was the effect on what were known as Small Businesses, as was BCDVideo? Even at $100M, OK, $108.8M, but who’s counting? The government couldn’t care less whether my company was $100M or $100...

💥 NEW: Why Every Author Should Know How Book PR and Social Media Differ: geni.us/BookMarketingTactics by @BadRedheadMedia via @Substack Most writers know we need to promote our books. But how exactly? The confusion starts when we treat PR, book marketing, social media, promo, and newsletters as interchangeable. They overlap, but each does a different job. 💥 Shout-out to my exclusive advertising sponsor, the always-free @Booklinker (universal book links—so helpful!), and the paid tool, @geniuslink. • PR gets you booked for an author reading. Publicity = public. • Social media helps people hear about it and gives them reasons to attend. It also spreads to the outer reaches of the internet, which helps visibility. • Broader book marketing makes it easy for people to find and buy your book (keep reading for specifics). • Your newsletter lets you invite existing subscribers and stay connected with interested readers afterward.
