👉 10 pieces total
👉 5 minted fully onchain & sold
👉 3 ready to mint - see website
Since gas is too high to mint today, thought I'd share some details on my process instead
Creative Process:
1. Scroll through years of photos on my google account. Find the key events that I want to immortalise.
2. Decide if the photos are suitable for use, and whether it is ethical - my family and friends have mostly not consented to become part of my art
3. If I can't use a real photo for that piece, I work with AI tools to recreate the vibe of the memory I am representing in the piece
4. Take the chosen image to PS, and crop, adjust levels, dodge and burn for light and dark spots
5. Run the image through my custom P5JS script to produce a first draft of the ASCII art. The script cuts the image into a grid and calculates the average grayscale value for each square. I then adjust the code to tweak the mapping of individual characters to different grayscale ranges, and tweak brightness and contrast within the javascript
6. Usually I go back to step 4 or 5 and do it all over again, many times, until the piece feels "right" to me
7. Create SVG file in Adobe Illustrator. Post-process via online tools and manual code edits to compress the filesize without losing quality
8. Wait for gas to drop and mint - this series is fully onchain for a reason, and that makes it expensive to mint.
I don't care. Will do another longform post sometime soon to explain why fully onchain is so important for this collection.

where does a contract get its randomness?
not from us but from 16 blocks nobody chose
the anchor points to the next block
the lock reads the hash and the art falls out
every byte lives on ethereum
the code, the art, the randomness
no server, no ipfs, no off-chain anything
this is magic behind fully onchain

"using the chain as a living medium instead of hosting a static JPEG on it is simply a more honest use of the technology"
Sounds alot like 0M//TX to me 👀
Evolving alone doesn’t make something beautiful. But using the chain as a living medium instead of hosting a static JPEG on it is simply a more honest use of the technology. It doesn’t automatically make Argonauts art, and it doesn’t need to.
“Is it art?” is the wrong question here. It was meaningless for Punks too, and for most collections that ended up mattering. What matters is whether there’s a real point of view behind the work. In Argonauts there is: an artist who treats the collection as something to be played with rather than flipped, ack’s signature in every detail, and a project that’s genuinely fun and built with obvious obsession. That’s become rare.
And pixel art isn’t low resolution. In a time when AI can render anything in infinite detail in seconds, choosing every pixel by hand is a deliberate act. Collecting tasty pixel art today feels like collecting the traditional art of the digital age.
Genuinely curious too: when you look at your Punk, do you see 576 pixels or 2017? 💀

a little insight. all my ascii collections start as generative art, capable of endless variations. But I've always preferred limited, curated releases. Something rare, personal, and true to why I create in the first place. Harder to collect, but straight from the soul
