when i tell you i’m still picking my jaw up off the floor TO THIS DAY!!!! this was so fucking insane.
In March 2015, national television aired a recording nobody was supposed to hear. A real estate heir had stepped into a bathroom mid-interview and forgotten his microphone was on.
His name was Robert Durst. His wife Kathie vanished in 1982. His best friend Susan Berman was found shot in the back of the head on Christmas Eve, 2000. The next year, his neighbor in Galveston washed up in the bay in garbage bags. The head was never found.
Durst had been living there disguised as a mute woman. He admitted cutting up the body. A Texas jury called it self-defense.
Before that trial he skipped bail and was caught stealing a chicken salad sandwich, with $500 in his pocket and $37,000 in his rental car.
Minutes before the recording, the director slid two envelopes across the table. One held a letter Durst sent Berman in 1999. The other held the anonymous note that sent Beverly Hills police to her body: her address and one word, "CADAVER."
Same block capitals. Same misspelling: "BEVERLEY."
He said he only wrote one of them. Then he started burping.
In the video below, the interview is over. He walks out. The room is empty. The mic is still on.
"There it is. You're caught."
"Arrest him."
"And the burping."
"What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."
The night before it aired, the FBI found him in a New Orleans hotel under a fake name, with a revolver, a latex mask and $42,631 in cash.
Before his 2021 trial, his own lawyers admitted he wrote the cadaver note. He got life without parole. Less than three months later he died in custody with his appeal pending, and the conviction was wiped.
Court records later showed the lines you hear weren't in the order he said them.
Did the microphone catch a confession, or did the editing room build one?
