ALT EU & NATO Move to Secure the Black Sea Amid Attacks on Commercial Shipping Following recent deadly strikes on civilian merchant vessels off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria, the European Parliament has formally called on the EU and its member states to consider deploying an EU naval operation in the Black Sea. In a resolution adopted with 432 votes in favor, MEPs held Russia responsible for systematically targeting civilian shipping and escalating the conflict into the western Black Sea. The Parliament emphasized that maritime security and freedom of navigation are vital to securing NATO's eastern flank and urged greater support for Bulgaria and Romania—including early drone detection, operationalizing an EU maritime security hub, and protecting undersea cables. Simultaneously, NATO is bolstering its southeastern flank by deploying additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, drones, and intelligence personnel to enhance situational awareness and surveillance.
