I love the flight from Boston to ASSAs. It’s like a fashion show for what kind of clothing to wear to Econ seminars….

Stepping carefully into this conversation between @crampell and @Avik because it seems like economists' voices need to be heard right now. It might be good to examine the Einav-Finkelstein-Cullen model to understand the dynamics of adverse selection in insurance markets🧵

Replying to @Avik @crampell @JDVance
(6/x) This is the basic actuarial insight that @JDVance was trying to express that @crampell claims will "unravel the U.S. health-care system." In fact, directly subsidizing those costs through reinsurance, as the GOP replacement contemplated, would strengthen U.S. health care.

The slope of the cost curves & demand! It's easy to see if there's more selection, which would look like moving around the MC curve, that deadweight loss trapezoid would change size. So back to @Avik and @Crampell, it's fundamentally an empirical question!!

I don't know what JD's ideas will do in practice. We've looked at this in specific example markets. But the best I have is use a foggy crystal ball. One thing I know for sure is that the role of economics is massively important. /end

I just visited this department and had an awesome time. You should seriously consider this job if you like intellectually stimulating colleagues and the great outdoors. 10/10 I would recommend. Ask me any Qs.

The Wall Street Journal @WSJ named @BentleyU as the 11th best college in the U.S. for 2025 (out of 500). I acknowledge that ranking universities is difficult -- lots of attributes projected onto a single score -- yet... 1/2 wsj.com/rankings/college-ran…

the ranking is a reminder that teaching students and publishing good research contribute to the advancement of society and constitute the engine of higher education. I'm grateful every day and congrats to my colleagues and my students. Have a good school year, everyone! /end
