They also clean up dead or dying cells, cellular debris and xcess surfactant (the substance that keeps alveoli from collapsing)
In bronchoalveolar samples or sputum, they are seen as particulate, granular cells
They scavenge for, engulf and digest inhaled dust, pollen, smoke particles, and intruding microbes be it fungi, bacteria or viruses.

Dust cells
Dust cells are alveolar macrophages and highly highly mobile phagocytes in alveoli that act as the lung's first line of defence.

Cytological features reveal mucinuos, columnar glandular or metaplastic cells with dark, hyperchromatic nuclei. Squamous dysplasia, ectropion, and clear cell adenocarcinoma are other complications of the synthetic drug's administration.
It has been a cause of infertility in such women and may further develop into clear cell Adenocarcinoma. Diethylstilbestrol moves the squamocolumnar junction into the vagina.
Diethylstilbestrol causes vaginal adenosis (persistent Müllerian epithelium islets), which is highly associated with in utero exposure in women who are daughters to women who received it during pregnancy.
It has been linked to vaginal, cervical and breast cancer in daughters born by pregnant women who received diethylstilbestrol treatment.
