On 31 March 1982, Acting Lieutenant Keith Paul Mills, Royal Marines, landed on South Georgia with a 22-man detachment from HMS Endurance.
They had been sent to watch a party of Argentines who had landed illegally, and to protect the British Antarctic Survey team at Grytviken.
Mills was 22.
Two days later, the day after the fall of Stanley, a far larger Argentine force arrived off King Edward Point. Captain César Trombetta, in Bahía Paraíso, called on the garrison to surrender.
Mills, given command once the landing turned hostile, told them to do one. London had signalled that any resistance should be token.
What followed was not token, the Argies weren't happy.
For about two hours his detachment fought from the shore against the corvette ARA Guerrico, helicopters and Argentine marines. They hit Guerrico hard — including with an 84mm anti-tank round below the waterline and a 66mm round near her forward gun — and shot down a Puma, damaging a second helicopter.
Enemy bingo was in full flow.
Argentine losses were three dead. One Royal Marine was wounded.
Only when the detachment was surrounded, and further fighting would achieve nothing, did Mills order a ceasefire. He then walked forward himself, under a white coat, to make the surrender.
The London Gazette citation records that he placed himself at great personal risk to do it, and that his leadership “reflected the finest traditions of the Corps.”
He and his men were taken prisoner and later repatriated.
Mills was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross; Sergeant Peter Leach received the DSM for the same operation. Mills was later promoted captain and left the Corps in 1996.
The fight did not hold South Georgia.
It did show, on the first full day of the war, what a handful of Royal Marines could do against a ship, helicopters and a landing force and it set the tone for what followed.
South Georgia was retaken on 25 April.

Kevin Sinfield once carried Rob Burrow over a marathon finish line. Rob had motor neurone disease and couldn't walk it, so his old teammate picked him up and carried him. Rob died in 2024. He was 41. Kevin kept running.
This week he's running 45km a day, seven days straight, round every Super League ground, finishing at Old Trafford. He's raised more than ten million pounds for MND doing this sort of thing since 2020. He calls it the Grand Finale.
Yesterday Princess Anne met him at the track in York. She's been patron of the MND Association since 2008 and I doubt she said much. She doesn't.
Today, day three, he came into the ground at Wakefield and William and Kate were standing on the pitch waiting for him. No announcement. They'd been at Headingley in the morning hearing about Rob, and then went to Wakefield to sit with families living with the disease, and then out onto the grass to meet a knackered man in running kit.
William gave Rob and Kevin their CBEs two years ago at Headingley, because Rob couldn't get to the palace. Last November he opened the Rob Burrow Centre and hugged Rob's widow, and Kevin called him a man of his word. Today he kept it again.
I don't know what else you want from a royal family. This is it. A brother-in-arms runs for his dead friend, and the future King and Queen, the King's sister, all of them, turn up at the side of the road, quietly, in the north, on a Tuesday, and then get out of the way.
Run well, Kevin. They're watching. So are we.

Just saw a really interesting article on the news about a defibrillator saving yet another life, however statistics show that over 64% of people are scared to use one if needed. Should we try to take them around schools so that the next generation grow up familiar with them going forward?? Or does that already happen? Would you use one to save someone?❤️🙏 @TheBHF

In emotional scenes in Wakefield, the Prince and Princess watched as Sir Kevin welled up speaking to supporters, and told him he was "so inspiring".
Burrow's three children, Macy, Maya and Jackson were there to watch along with his mother Irene.
It came after the royal couple also visited Sinfield and Burrows’ former club @leedsrhinos @mndassoc

British SBS LEGEND: Al Carns Reveals His Nickname Given to Him by his Teammates 🇬🇧⚔️
Al Carns, a former British Special Forces SBS operator, earned the nickname "Carnage" from his teammates while serving in Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Immense respect for @AlistairCarns. From serving 24 years as a Royal Marine Commando and Tier 1 SBS operator to earning the Military Cross for gallantry in Afghanistan, his record of service is second to none. A genuine hero who always stands up for our forces! 🫡🇬🇧

When British SAS Got Humbled
Anyone can train to get fit, but very few possess the SBS and SAS tier of mental dominance. They always had a rep for being heavy smokers and drinkers as well, it's 100% there mental strength it's the most important & dangerous weapon you own, if you are someone who has complete control of there mind where negativity doesn't ever be allowed to enter your thought pattern that's when you have the Elite mentality, not many have that, anyone can get super fit, but having a no surrender mentality is something very unique and special.

Labour have been in power for 2 years, 2 months and 24 days.
Since then they’ve attempted to stop local elections, scrap jury trials, change algorithms to favour “approved” news, and now take people's property against their will.
If someone listed those events without context, my mind would go straight to the Soviet Union of the 1930s.
This should not be Britain in 2026.
I went looking for historical precedent for governments taking people’s homes and property against their will.
Joseph Stalin.
Soviet Union.
1929.
Under Stalin’s forced collectivisation, privately held farms and property were confiscated and families were driven from their land.
I’m not saying Labour’s plan goes anywhere near as far as Stalin’s collectivisation. It clearly doesn’t.
But the fact we’re even moving further in the direction of the state taking control of privately owned homes should concern every single one of us.
