“Well, I think at this point what we can celebrate is that our voices are being heard,” says @carelvwyk, but waiting for another draft would risk repeating the same cycle of objections. “Let’s get proactive,” saysCarel, adding that what’s needed is a system that protects legitimate commerce and individual rights while giving authorities oversight; industry and civil society should organise representatives and commission studies, potentially through an independent academic institution, to develop proposals that address regulators’ concerns. “I think we should do the hard work today, understand the concerns of the Reserve Bank, and determine middle ground.” That requires recognising that different regulatory problems need different responses. Money laundering already falls within the Financial Intelligence Centre’s framework, while exchange controls address concerns including capital movements and balance-of-payments oversight. There are already bodies in place to monitor these activities, and crypto should be able to fit within the existing frameworks.
