As we prep for our next talk, we want to highlight a different #AvianArtivist project: Black Life Outdoors, an upcoming photo book curated by photographer Tonya Peele that showcases the diversity of ways Black people already enjoy outdoor recreational activities.
ALT A compilation of photographs showcasing Black people partaking in a variety of outdoor activities. In the first and largest photo on the left is a group of women hiking through the woods along a small rocky outcrop, facing away from the viewer. The second image is smaller and shows a man in colorful orange and green biking gear standing next to his bike in an open field and smiling at the camera. The final photo on the right shows a trio of women confidently standing with oars and wearing lifejackets, with purple and blue kayaks in the back- and foreground. Below the latter two photos is text that reads "Black Life Outdoors aims to create a true picture of outdoor recreation, one where we see ourselves represented."
Learn more about the project at BlackLifeOutdoors.com and look out for the book's release this Juneteenth (June 19)!
