The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

"BT:...When you think about the overall economic forces of the Chinese labs, they have to depend on distillation, if you develop a dependency on distillation, you won’t develop the capabilities to be on the frontier. So why can’t we all just relax?
SS: Because winning AI is more than having the most powerful model. Maybe this is the fish-in-water thing I didn’t articulate, why do I have all this angst about how quickly we’re diffusing? Because that’s the whole race, the whole race is who realizes the most value and is in the best compounding loop around the things that matter, as opposed to the dope fact that we have a cooler and cooler, more powerful model."

Two years ago, I published The Defense Reformation. It was a warning: America was in an undeclared state of emergency and our defense industrial base wasn’t ready to meet the moment. The response I received from people in industry and government was overwhelming. Everyone who was paying attention knew the situation was bad—and they were fired up to fix it.
We’re still in a state of emergency, but there’s good news: the hard work of reform and mobilization has begun.
The founders and funders have shown up. The heretical heroes have momentum at the Pentagon. The Last Supper of defense consolidation is over and the First Breakfast has begun. New entrants are flooding the space and forcing legacy contractors to up their game.
America is entering a virtuous cycle of competition, iteration, and innovation. The Arsenal of Democracy is coming to life.
To celebrate two years of hard-fought progress, I’m giving away 180 free copies of my book with Madeline Hart, Mobilize: How to Reboot the American Industrial Base and Stop World War III.
Claim yours, read it, spread the good word, and get back in the fight:

Only in America can you find a chemical company that made lightbulbs, TVs, optical fiber, and touchscreens possible because it's been run for generations by Katharine Hepburn's family of old boy New England aristocrats, and of course it's now crucial for scaling up data centers.
It made Edison’s first light bulbs, invented optical fiber and iPhone glass, and now mass-produces parts for AI chips and data centers.
Corning shows how U.S. firms can advance science and buck deindustrialization to beat China.

There is an unseen hand pushing AI safety as a political ideology.
Effective Altruists believe a tiny group of technocrats should decide how much technological progress the rest of us are allowed to have…. and how many shrimp your life is worth.
You are witnessing their attempted coup.

I spoke with Oleg Rogynskyy, CEO and co-founder of the Ukrainian drone company UFORCE, about Ukraine's acquisition system and his company's attempt to break into the Western defense market.

Borges is almost uncannily relevant. Library of Babel, yes, but much of his short fiction deals with similar themes… information overload, the extent to which we can trust the historical record and our senses, etc.
Replying to @StevenGlinert
Borges' Library of Babel contained every possible book, thus the masterpieces were impossible to find among the much more numerous bad books and the oceans of nonsense.
