"I'm a steward; I'm not an owner...It is important for the legacy to continue." - Robert L. Woodson, Sr. (1937-2026)
This is more than an anniversary. As we commemorate 45 years of the @WoodsonCenter and the passing of the baton from our late founder #BobWoodson to our now president, Will Crossley, it’s a moment to celebrate what’s been accomplished—and to envision, together, what’s possible.

"Our work is more important now than ever before." - Bob Woodson
In Bob's address to the @WoodsonCenter Community Affiliate Network affiliates, he shares an urgent message for all: partisan politics & political ideologies will not solve the issues surrounding our troubled neighborhoods. True neighborhood restoration -which ultimately leads to national renewal- will come from the determined "warriors" who live amongst the suffering and have the moral clarity to provide innovative solutions.

Keep showing up even when your efforts go unnoticed. The quiet choices matter so let character be the measure of your progress. Keep going.
Character is not formed only in life’s defining moments. It is revealed in the quiet choices, keeping our word, completing the overlooked task, extending kindness, and doing what is right when no one is watching.
As you begin this week, remember: small acts of discipline and integrity prepare us for greater responsibilities. Excellence begins in the ordinary.

On September 30, the American Enterprise Institute hosted Radical Grace: A Tribute to the Life and Work of Bob Woodson, an afternoon celebrating our founder’s conviction that lasting change begins with the strength and initiative of ordinary people. The program opened with a panel on our Black History and Excellence curriculum, featuring our team historian Stephanie Taylor. Former California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown and political scientist Wilfred Reilly also took part, and the afternoon closed with a fireside chat between President Will Crossley and Board Chairman Gregory L. Snyder on carrying Bob’s vision forward.
We are grateful to all who attended in-person and virtually, and special thanks to @AEI and @IanVRowe for such a wonderful tribute to @BobWoodson.
In Bob's lifetime, he saw numerous ways to fail a community. These failings are what motivated him to start the @WoodsonCenter. He dedicated his life to amplifying the community healers that recognized the brokenness in their communities, and sought to empower, uplift, and transform their neighborhoods from the inside out. This is America's ground game.

Marvin Olasky’s The Tragedy of American Compassion asked how we can help the poor without fostering dependency. @BobWoodson pushed further: stop seeing people as problems to be solved and start recognizing the “indigenous agents of health and healing” already transforming their communities.

"When government recognizes a problem, they do a drive-by analysis and parachute in a federal program, instead of looking for a remedy close to the problem." - Bob Woodson (1937-2026)
Do you believe the top-down approach works, or a grassroots groundgame is better to improve neighborhoods?
Where can you exercise Radical Grace in Action?

What a thoughtful way to honor Mr. Woodson's legacy.💙
A room in his honor💙
With our president Will Crossley and @BobWoodson's wife Ellen in attendance, our wonderful CAN affiliate, The Master's Apprentice [Denver, CO], dedicated a space to our late founder: the Robert Woodson Community Room. Not only a profoundly kind gesture, but also a testament to the enduring legacy Mr. Woodson has left all of us.
The Master's Apprentice offers pre-apprenticeship programs in the trades, created to help motivated individuals from low-income backgrounds.

Bob Woodson believed that the ones who stand to lose the most are the ones who have the potential to do the greatest restorative work in our nation. Instead of embracing a top-down approach, we must restore from the ground-up.

In @GivingReview co-editor @WilliamSchambra’s remembrance of a remarkable man at @AEI last week, he says @BobWoodson saw a world of grassroots leaders—“otherwise unnoticed, unfunded, and unappreciated”—quietly restoring their communities, one person and one block at a time. Woodson spent his life trying to get the rest of us to see that world, too, including through the @WoodsonCenter.
“And now it’s up to us to try to bring Bob Woodson’s vision to those with eyes to see,” according to Schambra.
"All they're talking about is what they're against, what they want to abolish, what they want to deconstruct; they offer no remedies." - Bob Woodson, 2020 interview with Hillsdale College
Bob believed that many of the "elites" who say they speak on behalf of low-income blacks carry little to no moral authority in the communities they claim to represent. Moral authority is embodied by those who are neighborhood healers: individuals and organizations who are indigenous to the communities they serve, offer remedies to the "sicknesses" of violence, poverty, and personal brokenness, and recognize that solutions-oriented approaches do not absolve individuals of personal responsibility, but instead teach them to be agents of their own uplift for the betterment of their communities.

“It’s one thing to say something. It’s another to do it.”
- Bob Woodson
Bob Woodson understood that making a real, positive impact requires more than good intentions. It takes courage, consistency, and action.
Today, let your work speak louder than your words.
His voice endures. The work continues
