Announcement: Due to military commitments and medical circumstances, Scourge will no longer follow a fixed Sunday release schedule. I’ll continue releasing articles as I work toward completing the book, publishing them when they’re ready. Scourge will remain free, as promised, and the complete story will be available to read once it’s finished. Thank you to everyone who’s been following along.

The Dark Urge is the hero of baldurs gate 3. #bg3 #Dungeonanddragons #baldursgate3 #DnD

The “Obey Your Father” Bhaal ending is actually the most biblically moral choice in Baldur’s Gate 3 Hear me out before you smash that reply button. Bhaal isn’t some cartoon devil. He’s the Angel of Death with a better PR team. In the Old Testament the Angel of Death shows up, looks at a city full of corruption, and goes “yeah, no.” Sodom and Gomorrah didn’t get a second chance because the locals were “just vibing.” They were running the exact same playbook as Baldur’s Gate: open degeneracy, cultists on every corner, and people who looked at a literal mind-flayer and said “yeah, I’d hit that.”The Dark Urge isn’t “falling to his worst impulses.” He’s the guy who finally reads the room, sees the false prophets (every companion who wants you to “be better” while they’re actively sleeping with demons, bears, or each other), and does what the Angel of Death does: purge. Let’s go down the list of Baldurian sins: Tieflings are canonically people with infernal blood. Demons with good PR. The Grove plot is literally “outsiders (demons + cultists) force their way onto private property and the druids are the bad guys for complaining.” Kagha says it. Halsin later confirms in Act 3 that the woods get tainted by civilization. The only way you don’t have to fight the druids is if you let the demons stay. The druids were right. The bear scene. I’m not elaborating. The Bible does not have a “druid turns into a bear and the party is cool with it” clause. The Emperor is the founder of the city and also a squid that wants to romance you. The city is named after a mind-flayer. That’s not a plot twist. That’s a warning label. Rampant homosexuality, the drow twins (incest), citizens who want to sleep with mind-flayers, gith who at least still treat humans as people instead of content… the whole place is one long Sodom & Gomorrah speedrun. Alfira shows up as a lesbian bard, plays the lute, and immediately runs the soft emotional-manipulation routine so you’ll feel protective of a stranger. The Dark Urge kills her. Later Dad tells you to kill Isobel. Do that and she and Dame Aylin both die. Aylin and Isobel spent the campaign sticking it to Ketheric, the father who damned himself for his daughter, then treated the wreckage as a romantic victory lap. No partial credit. Faerûn in general is a warlock convention. Ambitious wizards trying to sleep with pagan gods, Thayan Red Wizards, people making deals with demons so casually it started a blood war. A diabolist and a devil are allowed to operate inside the city. Bhaal looks at this and says “purge.” That’s not evil. That’s maintenance. Even the “good” endings don’t escape it. Wyll either keeps the devil pact for the Peter Pan thrill or becomes duke by killing his father. Gale either teaches illusion tricks to kids or ascends to lust after a pagan goddess. Shadowheart either goes full travel girly or kills her parents. Karlach dies or goes back to the Hells for more wrath and war-lust. Astarion becomes a bigger monster or just more of the same. Minthara keeps killing. Halsin, lets not go there. The redemption is cosmetic. The underlying arrangements stay. Withers gets sold as the calm, holy undead who just wants to help. He’s a pagan undead still serving Jergal, the god of death-and-knowledge who handed his portfolio to Bhaal, Myrkul, and Bane and then stuck around to keep the books. Knowledge of that kind is the apple: forbidden, recorded, and offered anyway. He raises the dead and hands you unwilling hirelings. Bhaal doesn’t do that. Bhaal doesn’t resurrect, doesn’t staff your party with corpses, and doesn’t keep a ledger so the next chosen can shop. He just wants the false prophet and the city that enabled her removed. On the Absolute itself: Bhaal sends the butler, calls Orin a false prophet and usurper, and notes she killed the previous butler. Her own grandfather agrees with the assessment until he flips. Gortash himself says he prefers you to Orin because you’re more reasonable and supports your birthright. The Emperor confirms Gortash is being sincere. Bhaal isn’t the one who started the cult that ate the Sword Coast. He’s the one who wants the usurper removed. The “everyone lives and you get the happy romance” ending is the reform-Sodom option. They live and then have to deal with a Gith–illithid war, the same arrangements continue, Nine-Fingers is treated as an acceptable power broker, the Blood War is still running, warlocks are still making deals, and a diabolist is still allowed to operate in the city. “Everyone lives” just means the problems are still on the board.Even the name is doing work. “Bhaal” is one letter away from Baal, the Canaanite god the Old Testament spent entire books telling people to stop worshipping. The Dark Urge obeying Bhaal is the same energy as the Israelites finally deciding the Baal poles had to go. False prophets everywhere, the city is rotten, and one guy with a very direct instruction from Dad finally does something about it. The dark urge even gets baptized to become formally recognized after purging the abomination that is Valeria a gold flying gender ambiguous elephant monster. So yes. The “Obey Your Father” ending is the closest thing BG3 has to an Old Testament morality play. Everyone else is trying to reform Sodom. The Dark Urge is just the Angel of Death who got tired of the paperwork. #BG3 #baldursgate3 #DnD #dungeonsanddragons
