Deb Haaland Makes History as First Native American Woman Elected U.S. Governor.
In a landmark victory that broke new ground for Indigenous representation, Democrat Deb Haaland has been elected governor of New Mexico, defeating Republican Gregg Hull, the longtime mayor of Rio Rancho. The Associated Press called the race Tuesday night as Haaland, a member of Laguna Pueblo, secured a decisive win with roughly 57 percent of the vote.
At 65, Haaland becomes the first Native American woman to lead any U.S. state. The former Interior Secretary under President Biden and one of the first Native American women elected to Congress in 2018 now extends a trailblazing path that includes serving as a tribal administrator, leading New Mexico’s Democratic Party, and directing Native voter outreach for Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign. Throughout her run she spoke of her years as a single mother relying on Medicaid, WIC, and food stamps before attending law school in her 30s.
Haaland will succeed term-limited Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and be sworn in on New Year’s Day, with Stephanie Garcia Richard as lieutenant governor. In her victory remarks she stressed that the moment is not only about history but about building a stronger future for New Mexicans.
