DID YOU KNOW?? The tiny globular springtail, an animal so small it could easily sit on the tip of a pencil, holds the world record for the fastest backflip on Earth! These diminutive, soil-dwelling hexapods lack wings, bites, or stingers. Because they are often only 1 to 2 millimeters in length, they are highly vulnerable to predators like spiders and mites. Their only defense is an explosive, biomechanical jump. To the naked eye, a globular springtail doesn't just hop; it simply vanishes, leaving behind a faint visual vapor trail if you try to film it with a standard camera. In late 2024, researchers using high-speed cameras finally decoded exactly what happens in the blur, revealing an acrobatic feat that outpaces every other animal on the planet. Walk with me 👇🏾👇🏾 Here is the exact biomechanical sequence of their record-breaking escape: 1. The Spring Release, Deploying the Furcula: Instead of using their legs to jump, globular springtails rely on a specialized, fork-shaped appendage called a furcula. This structure is kept folded under their abdomen under high tension. When threatened, a biological latch releases, snapping the furcula down against the ground. 2.Explosive Liftoff, A 1-Millisecond Launch: The snap of the furcula launches the springtail into the air in just one-thousandth of a second. The acceleration is roughly equivalent to that of a flea, propelling the creature up to 60 millimeters into the air, more than 60 times its own body height. 3. The Hyper-Speed Spin, 368 Rotations Per Second: Because the furcula is located at the rear of the body, the force doesn't just push the springtail up; it sends it into a violent backward spin. Airborne springtails rotate at an average of 282 times per second, reaching a peak rate of 368 rotations per second (Hz). 4. The Anchored Landing, Deploying the Sticky Tube: Nailing a landing after spinning backwards 29 times in a single jump is tough. While they sometimes just crash and tumble to a halt, they can also push a sticky, eversible tube out of their bodies to act as a grappling hook, instantly anchoring them to a surface so they can walk away. Beyond the Backflip: More Springtail Surprises: A. They Can't Jump Forward: Biomechanical studies show their jump is strictly a localized escape mechanism. They only travel vertically, backward, or slightly sideways. They are physically incapable of directing a jump forward. B. Not Technically Insects: Despite having six legs, springtails belong to a separate, ancient class of arthropods known as Collembola. They predate true insects in the evolutionary timeline by millions of years. C. The Hidden Food Web: As decomposers, they feed on fungi, algae, and decaying plant matter. A single square meter of healthy soil can contain tens of thousands of springtails, making them one of the most abundant arthropods on Earth. FINALLY! Should we tell DC & Marvel about this fella? Springtail-Man? 🌚 😂 😂 Hopefully you've learnt something new today? The Medic Who Writes™🌚 Cheers 🥂 😅
The speed is astonishing A globular springtail appears to teleport it launches itself using its spring-like furcula in a split second.

NEW: President Trump makes a major promise at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas: $5,000 for every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win both the House and Senate in the midterms. “I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”

You’re looking 2.5 million years into the past. Every photon from Andromeda began its journey before humans even existed.
Andromeda Galaxy (M31) Somewhere in this image could be billions of worlds… And we haven’t explored a single one.

Another eclipse outing in the early hours of this morning to the base of Glastonbury Tor. It was a fabulous experience to watch but less fabulous to try and get the settings correct and capture the scene in one frame 😂
