Just finished building my compact planetary gearbox! I designed it from scratch in CAD for small, high-torque BLDC motors. It stands at just 4.5cm tall with standard bearings and features an 8:1 gear ratio. The spur gears are machined from 4041 alloy steel by PCBway
Bearings are great. With just two, my tiny 8:1 planetary gearbox becomes easily back-drivable.

It’s always harder, takes longer, and costs more than you think it will. And it's still worth it.

Software is having its Uber moment. For years, SaaS companies could keep raising prices because building an alternative was too expensive. AI changes that. Now anyone can enter the market with a competitive pricing. And customers can vibe code a good-enough version themselves.
It's a bit fascinating watching what feels like panic in public from Tyler. I'm in some groups with lots of newsletter operators. Many people are fed up with Beehiiv and their price hikes. They are switching providers, building their own, or jumping to @marclou's that he built in like 3 hours. Tyler is doing what we call "rolling out the red carpet on the way out". He is now asking what he can do for customers after he has jacked the price up and they are leaving. That's the opposite of what you should be doing. The issue I keep hearing from so many customers is that there are a ton of bells and whistles and garbage that they have no interest in using but feel like they have no choice but to pay for. It's like your TV provider telling you how you have access to 673 channels but you're like, "that's cool... how do I get a package with the 4 I care about?". I don't have a dog in this fight because it's too easy to simply vibe code up all the parts of Beehiiv that I'd actually need and pay a fraction of the price. But it sure is wild to watch.

Everyone keeps saying local edge devices for AI is the best biz idea rn. I’ve heard this idea several times recently but hardly anyone mentions what problem they want to solve.

Today I sat in front of a historic resource commission in charge of making sure everyone spends 5x as much on all their exterior home repairs. Weird job

Did I accidentally get my site into the training data for ChatGPT? Just got off the phone with a staffing agency owner. They said chatGPT recommended my software, textwork. And like that, we have another customer getting onboarded

Review the prior proposal and its goal, distill them to their purest form, list the main pros and cons, note anything missing, and identify the single highest-leverage improvement that delivers roughly 80% of the benefit for only 20% of the effort.

Openclaw released a terribly designed app on purpose, and it’s working great - the amount of redesign posts is astonishing.
What if @openclaw iOS app actually looked like this instead? 🦞

You can speed run a motor at home with a a paper clip and battery. Try it, it’s fun
Every engineer should build their own motor at some point
