$90 OIL WITH NO BULLS LEFT IN THE ROOM
Adam Rozencwajg of Goehring & Rozencwajg: crude in the low $90 s is not a bull market. It is what you get when risk desks keep yanking shorts off the table. The physical market, he says, is tighter than the April–May spike — and the real bid has not shown up yet.
THE PRICE THAT SHOULD NOT BE HERE
➡️ Oil first exploded when the Strait of Hormuz shut in April and May.
➡️ In June, a reopen headline sent crude all the way back to about $70 — pre-war levels. Rozencwajg calls that move a mistake.
➡️ By September 1 the Strait was still impaired, the balance was tighter, and the quote still refused to make a new high.
➡️ A nine-handle today is not weakness. It is a market that has not priced the damage.
HOW THE SHORTS KEEP COMING BACK
➡️ Traders started the year extremely bearish. Net shorts and gross shorts were heavy.
➡️ The war did not create a new class of energy bulls. It created a physical squeeze. Sellers stopped selling. Prompt crude jumped. Hedge-fund shorts were liquidated.
➡️ Pod shops fired energy teams right after the outbreak. Rozencwajg’s read: those desks were short into the war. Risk committees forced the cover. That bid the front month, not the curve.
➡️ As soon as the crisis failed to explode “tomorrow,” the short was rebuilt. By the second memorandum of understanding, speculative gross shorts were bigger than they were in January.
➡️ When that deal collapsed, risk teams said it would not happen twice. Another forced cover. Another pop. Still no genuine bullish capital.
THE FORECAST
➡️ “Where do prices go from here? I suspect higher.”
➡️ He will not write tank bottoms down to zero. He thinks that risk is higher now than it was at the start of the year.
➡️ Cushing — where WTI is settled — is already near operational minimums. A squeeze there does not need every tank on earth to empty. It needs the contract tanks to fail on the day you have to get out.
➡️ Path one: emerging-market product inventories hit the wall and the short base covers in a panic.
➡️ Path two: the Strait actually reopens. Idle refiners, Chinese export plants, and drained strategic reserves all bid crude at once.
➡️ Either path squeezes the same thing. Barrels.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Ninety-dollar oil is a short-covering price, not a destination. The last time this market felt safe, it went to $70. Rozencwajg says that feeling is the trap.

Consistent feedback from trading desks has been that geopolitical volatility had paralyzed generalist funds from deploying and that at least in Canada, meaningful sidelined buying power exists, waiting for "the day after." The investment thesis was never the spike to $150+ on tank bottoms and the depletion of the US SPR, it was then and remains now a sector discounting ~$65WTI with what we think will be a fundamental floor of ~$80 given:
🛢️record low inventories that will continue to fall further (regional tank bottoms + US SPR at/near operational minimum levels)
🛢️~0.45MM Bbl/d of new demand for the next 3 years to restock depleted inventory + likelihood of increases to SPR targets
🛢️productive capacity challenges with 80% of most production coming online within 1-4 months but "the last 20% is the hardest" = >2MM Bbl/d
🛢️A Strait of Hormuz under IRGC control will never return to pre-war levels and partial workarounds will take years
🛢️ Reasonable to think some element of a political risk premium?!?
🛢️$74WTI = yellow light now for US shale? Inventory challenges only accentuated under growth mode
🛢️pre-UAE joining the non-OPEC ranks, non-OPEC production was forecasted to be peaking in 2026
🛢️pre-war, UAE adjusted, OPEC spare capacity was only ~1.35MM Bbl/d half of that is 100% reliant on the SofH

Takeaways from spending a day with some of the smartest energy people on the planet:
🛢️ The risk of a US product export ban is real if the national average gasoline price hits ~$5/gallon
🛢️the most important questions to come up at dinner were "how does this end?" and "why would Iran give up the Strait at this point?"
🛢️base expectation broadly is the Strait will NOT reopen soon as neither party is feeling enough pressure and both sides believe they are winning - military reopening not politically palatable and lacks European buy-in (you broke it, you fix it)
🛢️I believe the Kuwaitis, Saudis, and Emiratis will NOT ship through the Strait under an Iranian toll system. Incremental workarounds underway with more to come but will take years...Strait oil exports will never reach past levels
🛢️many expect US tank bottoms in July and US SPR to approach minimum operating levels in July/August (!) - the US has front-loaded emergency responses not having expected the closure to last as long as it has and now has limited recourse after July - Presidential jawboning has made the imbalance worse as demand has not yet been impacted. Regional product shortages are being masked (bring your own jet fuel)
🛢️skepticism around available data - China believed to be drawing from SPR even though satellite data does not show and Strait voyages OUT believed to be potentially higher than reported
🛢️how long will it take for production to recover? Weeks/month for majority (~80%) for KSA, UAE, Kuwait, the last 20% is the hardest, and big question mark for Iraq (~2.9MM Bbl/d shut-in) given geology and bureaucracy
🛢️biggest reason why the expected shortage has been delayed? Chinese drop in imports of ~4.0MM Bbl/d leveraging their SPR. Much skepticism around reported demand "destruction" of 5MM Bbl/d
🛢️Net/net: bullish near-term oil price with significant frustration on price action. "New normal" ahead with energy security priority 1, 2, and 3 = increased influence of Western Hemisphere (ie. Canada if we seize it). Many oil stocks discounting <$65WTI with an expected floor price of $75-$80 in 2027+

Energy investors should want a deal. Let's hope the "imminent deal" headlines are actually real, unlike the now 70th time in 2 months. The induced volatility/oil price suppression via social media is paralyzing flows into the sector and I believe there is a lot of buying power waiting on the sidelines for "the deal", with investors aware of the structural bull market ahead and hoping for a buying opportunity, suggesting any dip will be sharp, shallow, and bought.

$BRK Back drilling. Strong cash flow. What’s next for Brookside Energy?
Brookside Managing Director David Prentice highlights a strong set of results, with 12.5MMBOE of reserves underpinned by growing high-quality PDP and 1P components, driven by well performance rather than assumptions
With five consecutive years of positive operating cash flow and around US$100m generated, the model is clearly delivering
The company is now back drilling at SWISH with a two-well pad (Sabres and Whalers), reinforcing its repeatable development strategy, while near-term catalysts include drilling results, progress at Riverbend, and progressing the ADR listing - positioning 2026 as another key growth year!

An incomplete list of what "the day after" will look like and why the US/Iran "excursion" will have a lasting impact on the oil market:
🛢️the process of Strait of Hormuz normalization will be measured in months even when "peace" comes, whatever that may look like. Voyage time to get empty vessels into the Strait and then back to destination points = months. Until then, production losses (now ~11MM Bbl/d) mount, yet safety buffers like unsanctioned oil-on-water and SPR will soon be very inadequate. Physical shortages imminent.
🛢️forecasted Middle Eastern production cumulative losses ~900MM Bbls even with things normalizing in April = death of the Super Glut narrative = baseline reset for balances. Inevitable demand destruction cannot offset 11MM Bbl/d of production losses.
🛢️production coming back online will take months (Kuwait saying 3-4 months, what of Iraq?) + potential for (semi) permanent losses due to reservoir damage
🛢️expected enduring political risk premium of $10/bbl-$20/bbl with new floor price of $70-$80
🛢️what is the value of OPEC spare capacity (all 1.5MM Bbl/of it pre-war) if much of it is vulnerable to a $30,000 drone = increasing strategic value of long-dated reserves in politically stable countries with egress (🇨🇦)
🛢️we already have strategic hoarding and product export bans, expect more countries to build SPRs = future demand
🛢️still TBD damage of many refineries and infrastructure = abnormally high refining margins, plus need to replenish what was already low stock levels

Argonaut’s Sarah Kerr says oil could hit US$200 - and ASX energy stocks may be next to rerate.
