For my dear late mother, it wasn’t a lengthy wait between GP referral and diagnosis, it was getting the GP to believe us in the first place! It took 15 months, 3 letters, several phone calls, arguments about patient privacy/GDPR and a threat to report to GMC for incompetence!!
We’re on the way to 10 Downing Street to hand in our open letter signed by nearly 60,000 people, including broadcasting icon Jon Snow.
We’re dropping our weighty open letter on the PM’s doorstep just as we’ve released new research revealing how families affected by dementia are being forced to put their lives on hold as they wait for a diagnosis.
That’s why we’re calling for a bold and ambitious plan for earlier diagnosis.
Our CEO, Michelle Dyson, said:
'Too many families spend months, and sometimes years, waiting for answers while their dementia progresses. It is like trying to plan a journey without knowing where you are going or when you will arrive. Behind every delayed diagnosis is a family living with uncertainty and trying to prepare for the future without the support they need.'
