SNAP helps millions of people put food on the table and remains one of our nation’s most effective tools for reducing hunger. As FY27 begins, understanding program changes and eligibility requirements is critical to helping Californians access the food assistance they need. Check out @CenterOnBudget's resource below.

We're celebrating a significant win for California's food banks, farmers, and communities. @CAgovernor has signed SB 881 into law, extending the Farmer to Food Bank Tax Credit. Thank you to @SenMcNerney , our co-sponsor @cawrecycles, and the many advocates and partners who helped get this bill across the finish line. #FoodRecovery #CAFoodBanks #EndHunger

CA farmers & growers are among the most productive in the world & yet too many people go hungry each year. SB 881 benefits farmers and food banks by helping ensure that surplus food from CA’s bountiful harvest each year doesn’t go to waste and instead will help feed the hungry.

Great news! @CAgovernor has signed my SB 881, which enables farmers, growers, and food producers to continue to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and more to food-insecure families and receive tax credits for donating surplus food to food banks.

No one should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying for life's other essentials. 🍽️ Yet too many families are facing impossible choices as the cost of food continues to strain household budgets. Many are cutting back on groceries, skipping meals, or taking on debt just to get by. 💸 Rising food costs put added pressure on families already working hard to make ends meet, especially seniors, children, and people with low incomes. 🤝 Everyone deserves reliable access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. Strengthening food assistance programs and community support systems helps ensure families can put healthy meals on the table. #ThePriceIsHigh

When children lose SNAP benefits, the effects can reach beyond the grocery store. An NPR report highlights how federal SNAP cuts are creating challenges for school meal programs nationwide. In California, #SchoolMealsForAll helps ensure every student can access healthy meals at school, regardless of income. n.pr/4ADqAoj #FreeSchoolMeals #SNAPCuts #KidsNeedFoodtoFuel #SNAP @schoolmeals4all

Our member food banks do more than provide food. Across California, many help connect families with essential resources, including diapers, so children can thrive. This National Diaper Bank Awareness Week, we’re raising awareness of diaper need and the organizations working to meet it. We’re pleased to see @SenAdamSchiff release this important report highlighting the growing food insecurity crisis facing families across California and the country. Californians need a Farm Bill that includes meaningful relief for families as well as farmers. #SNAP #FarmBill
Later today, the Senate Agriculture Committee will again vote on a Farm Bill that falls short for California families. We need a bipartisan farm bill. Badly. But this isn’t bipartisan and doesn’t meet the needs of our people. I'm releasing a new report showing just how dire a situation American families are facing with food insecurity. Between devastating cuts to SNAP, rising food costs thanks to wars and tariffs, and persistent inflation, my office has heard directly from some of the millions of Americans who are struggling to keep food on their tables. This is the reality in California and other states across the country. And it's why I've fought to get a bipartisan Farm Bill that meets this pressing and growing challenge, and provides relief for California's hungry families. Read that report here: schiff.senate.gov/news/press…

Communities shouldn't have to compete for resources. A federal cost shift could force states to make difficult decisions that weaken nutrition assistance for families struggling to keep food on the table. frac.org/wp-content/uploads/…

When SNAP participation declines, families lose access to food, communities lose federal dollars, and local economies suffer. Congress can take action to reverse the harm and strengthen SNAP. secure.everyaction.com/76Itk…

“SNAP, or CalFresh in California, is the first line of defense against hunger. Food banks are not the safety net. We’re the hands beneath the safety net.” - Jared Call, Director of Public Policy & Advocacy

Earlier today we joined @SenAlexPadilla and leaders from @WellSpaceHealth, @Chancellor_May, @CalNonprofits, @CalCAPA, @CCRC4KIDS, @CALimmigrant, @CaAllianceKIDS, @CHIRLA, and @CalCFs for a roundtable discussion about federal funding cuts and the impact they are already having, and will continue to have, on California’s most vulnerable communities. Jared Call, our Director of Public Policy & Advocacy, explained: “California hasn’t yet seen the full impact of this reduction in federal food assistance. We represent the food banks, and we are the first to say that SNAP (CalFresh in California) is the first line of defense against hunger. Food banks are not the safety net; we're the hands beneath the safety net. As that safety net gets torn, more and more people are going to be showing up to food banks, and we're already stretched incredibly thin.” Thank you to Senator Padilla for continuing to advocate for Californians at a time when many are at risk of losing access to critical food assistance programs.

Gas, groceries, healthcare costs – they’re all up. Families are struggling to make ends meet, and Trump continues to double down, cutting funding for critical programs that help make life more affordable. That’s exactly why I stood alongside local leaders in Sacramento today, working together to safeguard funding for childcare, food banks, disaster relief, and more.
