From a zero-star recruit with no FBS offers to an All-American.
I talked to coaches and family from all points of #UCLA RB Wayne Knight's journey.
Check out my profile for the @latimes on the 5-foot-7 tailback before the Bruins face the Spartans.

Staying aggressive late.

Chesney's response when this was brought up today:
"I never heard that. I don't even want to dig into that much. I'm not worried what anybody else says. It really can't help us, and it really can't hurt us if we don't let it. It's irrelevant what what people have to say."
"[UCLA] reminds me of a rapper who raps with no substance in his lyrics."
@BMac_SportsTalk has questions about UCLA's ability to be considered a competitive College Football Playoff team.

.@calpostbbolch asked Chesney about Nico's injury.
Chesney clarified that he had not gotten surgery yet.
"He's still in his process of getting himself prepared and ready for that. It's got to be based on his body, how that all works out."
CONT:
"He's seeing it from an outside perspective. It's cool to watch him do that. He's here every day at every meeting at every single thing he does, and he's adding value and finding ways to add value, regardless if he can do it on the field or not."
.@EthanAHanson asked Chesney who's voice was loudest in the locker room at halftime:
"The guy that I see all the time is Mikey Matthews. He's on a scooter, and the the ability for him to move around this team and be a leader and never take a day off and never have a bad day."

CONT:
“We've done everything we could as far as the tickets, as far as the travel plans and the the free access, all those things. Our administration is doing a great job. We got to make sure everybody just keeps talking about it all the time now, especially on this campus.”
.@C_Morrissette asked Chesney about home attendance despite being 7-0
“The student section was slow to get in there, and then felt left early. We all got to do a better job, but we got to get more involved and make sure our guys in classes are talking about this with everybody.”

Ty on what it meant to celebrate with his Dad:
"I remember when I first started playing quarterback during Covid, in high school, we were out in the morning just throwing the ball around. He was out there in his gardening gloves catching the ball for me."
Ty on engaging with the fans:
"It means the world to me. It has been a crazy last couple weeks for this program with our starting quarterback going down. But I just think that it’s the way everyone has been kind of taking me in, just being there for me."
Ty on containing the returner:
"Just get in front of them. Hopefully you can delay them for someone to come and hit them. But at the quarterback position, people don’t really want to see the quarterback do that. For me, I will do whatever for
this team."
HC Bob Chesney on how his players don't flinch when things are not going their way:
"They're all in. They feel like they're 100% positive that they can win every single game when they walk on that field. They're confident. They don't overthink about anything and it's special."
Chesney on the camaraderie of the RB room:
"It's a brotherhood in that room, and it's not the easiest thing to do... As much as you want to be the guy that carries the ball 40 times a game. It's not feasible to exist at this level in this league with that many carries..."
Chesney on the aggressiveness of his offense:
"There were moments there in the fourth and late third where that box got pretty loaded, and we should have taken some shots on the outside. But at the same point, you're trying to run this clock out and get out of here with a win."
I asked Bob Chesney what it meant for his QB to track down the returner on the FR:
"It's 14 points is what Ty ends up saving there. I thought Ty's response at that moment of making sure he held that kid up till help showed up. It's everything. It's realistically 14 points."
