Kath kuni is derived from two words ‘kashth or kath' for wood in Sanskrit and ‘kona' for corner. With many typical ancient structures having survived tectonic tremors, the resilience of the kath kuni structures lie in the flexibility of dry masonry and alternate layers of wood beams without any cementing material. The stone plinth rises above the ground level giving strength to the superstructure and also preventing it from snow and ground water.

What if learning was not confined to textbooks, but unfolded through music, poetry, art and the natural world?
Established in rural West Bengal in 1901 by the renowned poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, Santiniketan was a residential school and centre for art based on ancient Indian traditions and a vision of the unity of humanity transcending religious and cultural boundaries. A ‘world university’ was established at Santiniketan in 1921, recognising the unity of humanity or “Visva Bharati”.
In 2023, UNESCO recognised this distinctive vision as a World Heritage site.
The spirit of Tagore lives on in Santiniketan. The main campus or core area retains the quiet, picturesque, sylvan atmosphere. Classes even to this day are held under the trees.

The Shiva Temple at Konch, dedicated to Konchesvara Mahadeva, dates back to the 4th–8th century CE.
The temple consists only of the sanctum, though it is believed to originally have a pillared hall (mandapa) in front, as several granite pillars and pilasters were found lying in the debris outside. The sanctum houses a Shiva Linga, and its inner walls contain niches. The roof is designed as a tunnel vault formed by arches meeting at the crown in a ridge. It has been built using special bricks placed edge to edge. Three different sizes of bricks were used in its construction.
Above the vaulted roof is an upper chamber inside the tower, with a rectangular entrance topped by a triangular head. Externally, the tower is curvilinear, with each wall divided into seven faces. Numerous sculptures depicting Vishnu, Shiva, Hara-Gauri, Ganesha, Surya, and various incarnations of Vishnu were also found within the temple premises.

The divine power of Devi lies in her strength to overcome evil and her grace to protect the righteous. This exquisite 12th–13th century sculpture, exhibited at Archaeological Museum, Jageshwar offers a glimpse into her divine power.
The eight-armed Durga stands on a lotus, her hair tied in a turban-like style and her elongated ears adorned with studs. She wears a short necklace and two long beaded necklaces, along with decorated armlets, thick bracelets, a finely woven sari, an ornate waistband and anklets.
Her right hands hold the chakra, a lotus and an akshamala, while the fourth is raised in abhaya mudra. Her left hands carry a trident, shield, conch and decorated kamandalu. The sword once held in one of her right hands is no longer intact.
Flying celestial figures bearing garlands appear above her head, with a lotus medallion behind it. Seated devotees, standing female attendants and vyala figures on either side add to the richness of the composition.
