How does French social theorist and philosopher Michel Foucault’s critical social theory complement Hayek’s approach to liberalism?
Yesterday, students and staff gathered to hear Mark Pennington, Professor of Political Economy and Public Policy at @KingsCollegeLon, explore this question. Drawing on his recent book, Pennington discussed how “postmodern liberalism” provides tools for identifying and challenging unfreedom, illiberalism, and potentially oppressive forms of “overgovernment” in contemporary societies.
Join us Monday for a conversation on free speech, disagreement, and what it means to live together as a pluralistic society, moderated by Judge Thomas Hardiman. This event is free and open to the public.

Yesterday, @sladesr joined us on campus to make the case for a forgotten ideal of American conservatism, drawing on her book "Fusionism: Liberty, Virtue, and the Future of the American Right."
Moderated by CGM's Founding Director @jmurtazashvili, the conversation explored where the conservative movement began, how it has changed in fundamental ways, and what the cost to our country will be if a classically liberal, or "fusionist," conservatism is abandoned.
Thank you to all who joined us, and to Stephanie for such a thoughtful conversation.
Congratulations to @HasinaJalal for winning the 2026 Carolyn B. Dexter Award for Best International Paper for her work: "When All Hope Seems Lost: Sustaining Learning Motivation in the Absence of Educational Pathways."
The paper shows how Afghan women banned from formal education keep their motivation to learn alive through small, safe wins and quiet peer support that build momentum.
