Professeur au Département de physique théorique, Michele Maggiore a été nommé responsable scientifique du télescope Einstein, qui détectera les perturbations gravitationnelles générées par les collisions lointaines de trous noirs.
Le projet colossal au budget de 2,5 milliards d’euros, qui n’existe encore que sur le papier, devrait réaliser sa première observation d’ici à 2038. Il permettra ainsi d’explorer l’Univers sur toute la durée de son histoire cosmique, et d’étudier la physique à proximité des horizons des trous noirs, mais aussi la structure interne des étoiles à neutrons.
