Meet Shanti and Cinder!
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute has announced the names of its red panda twins, born May 29 at its conservation campus in Front Royal, Virginia, to parents Sequoia and Mow Mow.
The female cub, Shanti, honors Shanti Malla, a forest guardian who helps protect wild red pandas and their habitat in western Nepal. Her brother, Cinder, gets his name from his reddish-brown coloring.
Learn about the inspiration behind their names and the conservation work they celebrate. The Front Royal campus is closed to the public.

The monologue that follows treats the invitation itself as the setup.
