Today is the feast day of Pope St. John Paul II. Pope St. John Paul II consistently affirmed that capital punishment was “cruel and unnecessary.” In 1999, he called for a “consensus to end the death penalty.” It was he whom Pope Francis quoted when denouncing capital punishment in his 2020 encyclical, “Fratelli Tutti,” saying that his predecessor had “stated clearly and firmly that the death penalty is inadequate from a moral standpoint and no longer necessary from that of penal justice.” Pope St. John Paul II, pray for us!

As the hour of execution arrives for #WilliamReaves, we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

One year ago today, Missouri executed Lance Shockley despite serious doubts about his guilt. In prison, Lance was a leader, peacemaker, a minister. His life reflected the possibility of redemption. Missouri refused to recognize it. We send our love to all who loved Lance.

Doctors at Gemelli Hospital removed a cancerous tumor from Pope Leo XIV’s right lung, according to the Holy See Press Office. The surgery was successful, with no complications, and the Holy Father has returned to his hospital room. We ask the faithful to continue praying for Pope Leo’s recovery and for the doctors and staff caring for him. We also hold in prayer all who are living with cancer, their families, and those who care for them.

The state of Florida has executed #JamesRobertson. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. If it was not for the death penalty, Frank Hart would still be with us. We pray for him and his family and we pray that the cycle of death caused by capital punishment would end.
