Heavy-ion collisions at the LHC create a plasma that existed in the early universe. For the first time, CMS is using “event-shape engineering” to investigate how charm quarks fly in the expanding geometry of this extraordinary medium.

A breakthrough is not just about the discoveries we make today, but also about empowering the people who will make tomorrow's discoveries possible.
Congratulations to the inaugural cohort of the CMS Breakthrough Prize PhD Awards 2026!

We only have moments to decide which collisions are worth keeping. With more ideas than researchers and more data than we can store, the big question is: how do we make sure we don’t throw away the discovery we’re not yet looking for?

Could the invisible leave footprints in our detectors?
CMS performs the first collider search for "inelastic dark matter" in the case where dark-matter particles travel a measurable distance before decaying into a pair of low-momentum electrons.

When rare decays enter the precision era...
The CMS collaboration CERN keeps seeing the same intriguing pattern in decays of bottom quarks to strange quarks and two muons: systematically lower rates than predicted by the Standard Model!

🤔How do you spot a decay that is expected just 1–100 times in 10 million decays? CMS is using huge amounts of data collected between 2016-26 to search for one such process: a W boson decaying into three charged hadrons.

How to catch subatomic particles wakeboarding in the universe’s most perfect liquid! 🌊
The hottest, densest, and most perfect fluid in the universe behaves in a surprisingly similar way to water rippling around a speedboat. 🚤

Four gets you more: understanding the strong force with four-way energy correlations.
CMS now has deeper insight into QCD dynamics after measuring, for the first time, energy correlations among four particles within a jet!
