NEW ARTICLE + QUIZ Two scientists are measuring the same construct (e.g. happiness) on the same sample. Will they obtain similar results? (suppose no measurement error) Think about it... 3 2 1 ... Even if intuitively we would say that yes, they should get at least similar (if not identical) results, the answer is: no, measurements are going to be very different and they may even obtain opposite results. Why? Well, when we build a measurement we need to perform a series of small choices such as: - How do I phrase a question? - How many items should I include? - Which model should I use for analysis? And different scientist will make different choices. Usually we assume these choice to have a small impact thinking that if the measurement is valid, then everything is ok. Unfortunately, in practice we find that every operationalization is almost "sensing" different aspects of the same construct. This can produce conflicting results, opposite correlations and even completely different dynamic behaviors. In this brief comment I provide more examples and explanations: nature.com/articles/s44271-0…

Comprehensive summary of our recent collaboration with @dr_andrewlaw @wholovesburrito @UnaWanging @GoskenC @joshuacyyang on a taxonomy for #DePIN systems😍 Looking foreward to present it at #IEEE 9th World Forum on #IoT πŸš€
As decentralized physical infrastructure networks (#DePIN) continue gaining traction, @BallandiesMC, @wholovesburrito, Joshua, Chris, Hongyang and I are excited to present a paper proposing a comprehensive taxonomy for categorizing and analyzing these emerging systems. TL;DR: The paper introduces a multi-dimensional framework encompassing distributed ledger technology, cryptoeconomic mechanisms, and physical infrastructure components. Key highlights: 1. The taxonomy defines 8 main components with 41 attributes to classify DePIN projects based on technical architecture, incentive designs, governance models and hardware specifics. 2. It extends existing DLT and IoT taxonomies by incorporating physical infrastructure elements like devices, spacing, middleware and routing. 3. Three new dimensions are introduced - hardware, middleware and governance - to capture the unique aspects of decentralized physical networks. 4. The taxonomy uses a rigorous conceptual-to-empirical methodology involving literature analysis and validation using real DePIN examples. 5. It provides a common language and structure to analyze the diversity of DePIN designs, promoting knowledge sharing and collaboration. 6. By systematically organizing the emerging DePIN field, the taxonomy can enable innovation, highlight unexplored architectures and avoid duplication of efforts. 7. It serves as a conceptual foundation for future research on technical standards, regulatory frameworks and adoption of decentralized physical infrastructure. IMHO, the proposed taxonomy delivers an important first step in formally defining and categorizing the nascent DePIN ecosystem. As more projects emerge, the taxonomy can evolve through continuous empirical evaluation and community input. It has the potential to accelerate research and development of blockchain-powered decentralized physical networks. We welcome feedback from the community @Old_Samster @guywuolletjr @masonnystrom as we continue refining this taxonomic foundation for the emerging DePIN ecosystem. Please check out the preprint on research gate!

🚨New Preprint🚨 If we removed sampling bias and measurement error, then our #measurements would be perfect, right? What if instead we discovered that even in this case the result depends on arbitrary choices made during data collection and analysis?[1/6] psyarxiv.com/pb9uy/
