“The geopolitical premise behind Beijing’s connectivity project is crumbling, as Hormuz demonstrates. Some analysts are already warning that Ottawa’s warming ties with Beijing could lead to a quiet return. The bank’s own founding agreement allows a member to withdraw by written notice and settle its capital. Ottawa should finish the review, give notice and bring Canada’s money home. Then it should redirect that capital to partners and institutions that share our values.” thebureau.news/p/beijings-be…

Thai authorities should not forcibly return two Uyghur men to China, where they face grave risks of torture and other serious abuses, @hrw said today. The two men, whose names are not public for security reasons, were transferred from prison to immigration detention in Bangkok after receiving a royal pardon, apparently in preparation for deportation. hrw.org/news/2026/11/03/thai…

That memory raises a question larger than either a volleyball competition or a footballer’s apology: what happens to freedom in a democratic society when exercising it becomes too expensive for the institutions expected to uphold it? bitterwinter.org/apologies-f…

China just told the Philippines to muzzle its own politicians. In a Nov 3 call, Wang Yi told Philippine FM Theresa Lazaro that bilateral ties face “malicious interference.” He accused a small number of Philippine politicians of repeatedly attacking and smearing China, crossing Beijing’s “red lines,” and politicizing trade and people-to-people ties for their own interests. Wang demanded Manila rein them in, stick to the one-China policy, and exercise caution on maritime issues. China’s resolve on sovereignty and reunification is “unwavering,” he said. The actions are “irrational and intolerable.” Lazaro called the talk “frank and constructive” and reaffirmed the one-China policy. Both sides agreed to manage differences and oppose provocations. Beijing is now openly demanding a sovereign country silence its critics.

Beyond its global emissions impact, this expansion will also intensify the harms already faced by Uyghurs, bringing heightened stress on groundwater in an already arid region, toxic waste streams that degrade the land, and air pollution displaced from eastern cities as coal capacity there is curtailed and relocated westward. chinafile.com/reporting-opin…

“Genetic Technology Allegedly Used in Uyghur Repression System. The US blocks imports from 3 Chinese biotechnology companies due to suspected links to Uyghur forced labor & genetic data collection for surveillance of minority groups.”
Teknologi Genetik Diduga Digunakan dalam Sistem Represi Uyghur. AS memblokir impor dari 3 perusahaan bioteknologi Tiongkok karena dugaan keterkaitan dgn kerja paksa Uyghur & pengumpulan data genetik utk pengawasan kelompok minoritas.

The Chinese have attempted to proclaim their claims by declaring that “history cannot be tampered with”. Yet the documents they publish do exactly that. They turn intermittent garrisons into two thousand years of sovereignty and call a war of annihilation a “homecoming”. They present Turkic and Mongol khanates as China’s “local regimes” and deny two republics that actually existed. While the Uyghurs’ own dictionaries, poems and inscriptions are there for all to see, they tear them away from the Turkic world. And they rewrite more than a thousand years of Islamic faith as a foreign coercion. The Uyghur reading of the same records is far more faithful to the evidence. East Turkistan is a homeland the Manchu empire conquered in the eighteenth century and that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seized by force in 1949. Its people are a Turkic nation with their own language, literature and memory of statehood. Islam, rooted in Kashgar since the tenth century and kept alive at shrines for centuries, is not something that came from outside, but their own faith. In the end, the real question is to whom the right to tell a people’s history belongs. The Chinese claim is that it belongs to the state that detains people, erases their language and demolishes their holy places. A more honest scholarly approach would begin with the Uyghurs’ own narrative, which these studies were written to silence. More on my article; uyghurstudy.org/chinas-destr…

China is not only suppressing Uyghur culture and identity, it is rewriting Uyghur history to justify its repression, genocide and crimes against humanity. In his latest article, @AHakimIdris examines how Beijing distorts historical narratives to legitimize its repressive policies in East Turkistan. uyghurstudy.org/chinas-destr…

Mao Zedong’s rule brought devastating repression, including religious persecution, the destruction of mosques and temples, and the suppression of Uyghurs and Tibetans. His disastrous policies contributed to tens of millions of deaths.

One example (of many) of how negative emotional expressions - most commonly, crying - were deemed problematic and a subject for "ideological work": shahit.biz/urumqireports.php… "provisional sentencing" = camp sentences that were given out to most detainees in late 2018 / early 2019.
