Delivering Kenya's national statement during the General Debate, the Acting Commissioner for Refugee Affairs, Ms. Mercy Mwasaru, highlighted the country's progress in transforming refugee management through the SHIRIKA Plan, which seeks to transition from a predominantly humanitarian and camp-based approach to a government-led, development-oriented model that promotes refugee self-reliance, socioeconomic inclusion and development of host communities.
Kenya further called for predictable, sustained and multi-year international financing to support refugee-hosting countries, while emphasizing the need for stronger partnerships and durable solutions to forced displacement.
On the sidelines of the session, the Kenyan delegation held bilateral engagements with representatives of the German Government, the World Bank, UNHCR and the USA Government, aimed at strengthening partnerships and exploring opportunities for collaboration in refugee protection, socioeconomic inclusion, sustainable and durable solutions.
The engagements underscore Kenya's continued commitment to advancing sustainable refugee solutions, strengthening international partnerships and promoting shared responsibility in addressing forced displacement, while ensuring that both refugees and host communities benefit from inclusive development.

Our Principal Secretary, Dr. Belio Kipsang, today presided over the 2026 Mazingira Day celebrations as Chief Guest at Kimondi Forest in Nandi County, alongside Governor Stephen Sang, Conservator of Forests John Momanyi, County Commissioner Wilberforce Kilonzo, Deputy County Commissioner for Nandi Central Elizabeth Atemi, and other leaders.
During the exercise, we successfully achieved the 100,000 Trees in One Hour Challenge, planting 100,000 trees at Kimondi Forest between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Tree-planting activities also took place across the country, demonstrating our collective commitment to environmental conservation and climate action.
Nandi County has set a target of planting 16 million trees, contributing to Kenya’s national ambition of growing 15 billion trees. Achieving these targets calls for collective responsibility, not only planting trees but also nurturing them to maturity.
As we pursue development, let us protect our forests, restore our environment and safeguard our natural resources for future generations.
