Hot take about the Pokemon / Excell Brands acquisition:
At the end of the day Pokemon and distribution do not decide prices of Pokemon product, the market does. When I started selling I was lucky to make 0.25 a pack, in fact I was told 0.25 was the goal. “Sell packs and make a quarter, sell a box and make five bucks, do it at volume and that’s how you succeed” that’s what I was told when I started selling. But the market back then only wanted to pay $3 a pack, and that was because we were paying 2.75ish from distribution and everyone was making Pennies.
This acquisition will in no way make prices lower. In fact, it is my opinion that the market comes down when LGS’s get product, not big box, so if anything I think this is just a play by TPCI to capture more of the market. What’s more believable 1) Pokémon cares about prices and wants everyone to buy packs at a lower price or 2) the multibillion dollar company wants to capture more market share and be able to sell its own product at full market and make more money?
Just my two cents. Don’t see much changing.
Let me know your thoughts!
Hit the Mega Gengar EX out of Ascended Heroes on our second pack!! And it was a giveaway pack to one of our customers!! So Lucky!
Wait, is PSA charging more for a 10 the same as a rip n shipper asking for a tip when they pull a top chase? 🤔
Was the only downfall of TAG the cheap slab material? People love the AI grading? Love the look of the slab? Couldn’t TAG just get better plastic like PSA or CGC and start being popular again?
“EvErYoNe LiKeS gOlDs NoW” yea have you seen these new ones? I’ve always been a fan of the gold Pokemon, like Charizard, but the energies and stadiums felt a little lame! These new golds are sick, and everyone should like them!
I’m seeing a lot of rip n shippers offer bounties again. I always thought bounties were a way to increase sales when things were slow. Either people are saving for mega in a few weeks or buying is just slowing down.
I hate oversized cards, but an oversized art rare is kind of cool!
Victini Illustration Collection also up at Pokemon Center! pokemoncenter.com/product/10…
I agree with a lot of Rudy said in the video, but his point about things being ripped like crazy today is the main reason for these prices. If you look at two sets that are similar price, Paldea evolved and Silver tempest, you would think ST should be higher since it’s from the last block and probably not getting a reprint. But if you look at available stock on TCG Player they both have pretty much the same amount of boxes and sealed cases for sale, so it makes sense they are around the same price since it seems like there is little left of each right now. It would be interesting to know what’s sitting in more investors piles right now.
Y'all really need to watch this video from Alpha Investments because he makes excellent points (btw this is one of the oldest and largest investors in our hobby and was here long before investing was even a thing)
Some key points:
1. This current market makes doing what he did 10 years ago impossible. (Stacking 20 cases of a booster boxes for investing)
2. The fast climbs in market prices is not healthy, we need steady growth. The current market of insane price jumps continuing will see us more likely have a massive bubble pop.
3. Most of his high end transactions are done in crypto (showing a correlation with crypto bros and the market spikes... just thought this was an interesting mention)
4. Vintage isn't skyrocketing on the levels that modern is, which doesn't make sense with modern still being printed.
5. Most young people getting in to the game have no idea what they are doing, and more than half watching his videos today won't be here in a year.
6. It makes no sense for DRI to be approaching $300 a box while SWSH era boxes (which are out of print) are the same price.
7. Most people don't care about investing/collecting, it's about flipping.
8. The burn rate of sealed product (massive pack rips, rip and ships, etc) is hard to even compute with how massive it is.
9. If we returned to that 5-15% growth every year that should be normal, most people will leave because they want quick flips and won't see that as actual growth.
The man preached nothing but truth. If you trying to watch an investment YTer, Rudy is who you should watch, not people like Nostalgia Nomics who preaches everyone should buy $300 DRI boxes.
