The autopsy: a time-proven, reliable, and relatively inexpensive process to inform and assist the living, and one which provides an important societal safeguard. #ForensicPathology #DeathInvestigationMatters

If experiencing chest pain, it might be sensible to consider the possibility of heart disease and get an ECG too. It is incredible how many people end up dead after passing off chest pain as GO/ERD, when it was their heart disease smouldering all along.

Great to be back lecturing at the @RCMP training college in Chilliwack.
Status epilepticus roboticus.
🇨🇳 A robot lost control in front of everyone at Beijing’s 2026 World Robot Conference, footage shows the machine thrashing hard on the floor after its remote reportedly died.
Operators rushed in and it still struggled to power down.
One moment it was a polished showcase, the next it was pure chaos: a sharp reminder that even the most advanced machines can turn unpredictable the second the control systems fail.

I am surprised to find that the @Thirlwall_Inq report does not include any reference to the competencies of all the doctors and pathologists who failed to detect the murders that long retired paediatrician Dewi Evans was able to identify so quickly and easily.

Welcome to the UK where thousands of people who are already dying, and want to die a bit quicker, are not allowed to. And thousands of people who don’t want to die end up dying because they can’t get access to the right care quickly.

I was asked to write a briefing paper for someone high up whom I won't name. It has also been suggested I made it public so I have put it on my blog, here (mephitis.co/post/briefing-pa…). Feel free to use it, make suggestions, let me know of any errors, etc.

An article by Rose Anne Kenny, MD, DSc, summarizes the classification, evaluation, risk stratification, and management of syncope. History, examination, electrocardiography, and orthostatic blood-pressure measurement identify the cause in most patients. Read “Syncope”: nej.md/4cjFuVU
Be wary of non-expert interpretation of postmortem findings. Observations at autopsy are of course important, but form only part of the diagnostic dataset. Circumstantial information (in this case informed by video footage) can be pivotal and must not be overlooked. (1/3)
It should also be borne in mind that the autopsy cannot *see* physiology – that is, the function of the bodily systems. Inferences therefore need to be drawn, and an opinion is formed based upon all available relevant evidence, with reference to published data. (2/3)
