I am a huge believer in the Copernicus Programme and remote sensing is at the core of understanding climate change. I will propose to start the next generation of Sentinel satellites at #CM22, to gather the full picture of our planet.

In the aftermath of the devastating Venezuela earthquakes, Copernicus Sentinel-1 measured ground displacement of up to 65 cm around Caracas using radar observations from space. 🛰️🌍
The data are helping scientists better understand the event and support disaster assessment efforts.

Most of the displacement moved land east and west because the earthquake occurred on a strike-slip fault.
The fault rupture propagated offshore to the east and onshore near the Caracas airport. Much of the worst destruction was near the fault rupture. go.nasa.gov/3QR8fC9

This map uses data from the @nasa-@isro NISAR satellite captured before and after the quakes.
Red areas show where the ground moved east and up; blue areas moved west and down. The darker the color, the more displacement. White areas indicate little or no displacement.

ALT A satellite-derived map of northern Venezuela’s coast displays red where ground shifted eastward and blue where it shifted westward. A thin white line marks where the fault ruptured below ground, stretching from about San Felipe to Morón and out to sea. The land above the fault line is mostly yellow, orange, and red. The land below the fault line is mostly blue and, below it, white. An inset shows the area around La Guaria in greater detail. It is mostly a deep blue, with a white line at the fault rupter and, above that, a red area near Catia La Mar. Credit: NASA
