SIT DOWN TALK IN THE OLE MISS CIRCLE - THIS SUNDAY This Sunday, October 25, I will give an hour and a half sit down talk on Ole Miss history, from 3 PM to about 4:30. Come to the Center of the Universe, the prettiest campus in America, and hear Her history that only I know. It only took me 36 years to figure it out. Come hear: The history of the Lyceum, Ventress Hall, the Old Chapel. Who has camped in the Circle? Who has died in the Circle? Who has walked through the Lyceum doors? How many men were patients at the Civil War University Hospital? How many died there? Hear about student pranks over the tears. Hear about the many Southern symbols and Confederate Monuments at Ole Miss. Did Union troops really stable horses in the Lyceum during the War? Who rode horses into the Lyceum? What do the SQUIRRELS do on gameday? What story happened in the old Chapel that still breaks me up? What were the first year classes like in 1848? Where are the slave fingerprints in which Circle building? What was the University student schedule like before the War? How many different military groups have drilled in the Circle? When was the FIRST tailgate? And much more. As one tour group member told me, and other people, "Starke taught me more Ole Miss history in four hours than I had learned in four years as a student". Bring a folding chair to sit on. Bring a jacket in case you get cold. We should have a 77 degree day that will be cloudy. It is always shady in the Circle. I do these talks for tips. I will bring some bottled water. PEE before you leave the house! Bring your husband if you can't leave him at the Library, books or Bar. There is NO haranguing the speaker! (See, I learned some BIG words at the BIG State University!) I will be in the Circle early wearing a RED shirt. I will be somewhere in the middle, near the old, round fountain. Park on the Circle, it is free and open on the weekends. There is NO need to tell me you are coming, just show up. If YOU don't show up, I will just have to talk to the squirrels, and they have already heard all my jokes! Don't forget to bring that folding chair, or sit with the ANTS! BIG, BAD BITING ANTS! CARNIVORES! And don't forget to PEE, before you leave the house, condo, dorm room, County Shack, or BAR. SEE YOU THERE THIS SUNDAY AT 3 PM!

HERE IS HOLLY SPRINGS, MISSISSIPPI AS IT LOOKED BEFORE THE RAVAGES of the CIVIL WAR By all accounts Holly Springs was called "Beautiful", and, "A Garden City". A local homeowner put a mark on one of his front columns every time the Union Troops came into the town. By the end of the War, it is said he had 60 marks on that column! When General Grant came through Holly Springs in late November, of 1862, with 50,000 men, it was said it took 3 days for those Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and their wagons to go through the town. Do you know what happens when 50,000 Union troops march and ride through your town, and a Union Post is set up there? Every store is emptied out by theft. All the wells and cisterns are drunk dry. Horse poop, and even human poop is EVERYWHERE. Most houses have been emptied out of food, and anything of value, by theft. All edible animals are taken and eaten. All horses and mules are taken. Resident citizens are robbed on the street. Most clothing is taken, even the shoes and boots from men's feet. Most every citizen is cursed and threatened, including women. All alcohol is found and consumed by the Soldiers. Any military age man is arrested and eventually shipped to a Union Prison Camp, whether he was ever in the military or not. A rape or two occur. A murder, or at least an attempted murder, occurs. All firewood is gone, to include all fences. The larger houses are taken over and used as Headquarters. The Churches are generally abused. And on, and on, and on. Modern Americans have no idea how bad it was. By late 1864, the Courthouse, over half of the Square, and maybe a quarter of the houses had been burned down, mostly by Union troops. Twenty five percent of the Square was blown up by Confederate Earle Van Dorn, during his December 1862 raid on Grant's supply depot there. Van Dorne had to destroy the tons of Union Ammunition supplies placed in the Fraternal building of the East side of the Square. It was all blown up, building included. After the Van Dorn raid in Holly Springs on December 20, of 1862, Grant had to turn around and retreat to Memphis because he had lost all his supplies. Thus, those 50,000 Union troops had to march back through Holly Springs. That was a second reign of terror, for the town! After the War Holly Springs was called "Run Down", and "Ruined". It certainly was.
